FEAR
“What on earth are you afraid of?”

“Do not be afraid;
for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy
that will be for
all the people. For today in the city of David,
a Savior has been
born for you who is Messiah and Lord.”
(Lk 2:10-11)
In
medical terms, “fear” is often defined as an unpleasant, often strong
emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger, often accompanied by
increased autonomic activity (increased heart
rate, blood pressure and sweating). “Anxiety” is defined by an abnormal and overwhelming sense of
apprehension and fear often marked by the same physiological signs, by doubt
concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one’s
capacity to cope with it. However, “fear” in the most general
term as used in the English vernacular, and so often in the multitude of
mystical gifts from God the Father, Our Lord Jesus Christ and Our
Lady of Emmitsburg through Gianna Sullivan, most often implies anxiety and
usually loss of courage. The moral evaluation of anxiety begins with the
exercise of prudence, to discover if there are valid grounds for the
apprehension. If there are not, to act on the anxiety or fail to act because
of it would be a lack of trusting God’s Providence.

Fear of the Immensity of the Mission
"Since we
have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,
let us exercise
them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith;
if ministry, in
ministering; if one is a teacher, in teaching;
if one exhorts, in
exhortation; if once contributes, in generosity;
if one is over
others, with diligence;
if one does acts
of mercy, with cheerfulness."
(Rom 12: 6-8)
Webster's Dictionary defines
"mission" as a specific task with which a person or a group is
charged. In the case of these mystical events through Gianna Sullivan and
involving God the Father, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and Our Lady
of Emmitsburg, the mission and the understanding of that
mission by not only Gianna, but by those who have been called to participate in
that mission, have evolved over 20 years to encompass all of humanity. Our
Lady has said:
"Your work is immense!"

In an even more recent message
to Gianna, Our Lady of Emmitsburg spoke of that mission which is
particular to each and every soul:
"Every soul is special to God. Every soul has a
mission; and when a soul agrees and gives itself through the human will totally
to God, then there is a most glorious event that unfolds….Never be afraid of
any person, and never hold back from helping humanity, especially when you know
the Truth with the conviction of God." (Private, OLOE, April 1, 2008)
A. The Call To Mission
The Seer/Prophet
"The God of our ancestors
designated you to know His Will,
to see the
Righteous One, and to hear the sound of His voice;
for you will be
His witness before all to what you have seen and heard."
(Acts 22:14-15)
In
1988, well before Our Lady began appearing almost daily to Gianna, Our Lord
was privately preparing her spiritually for a mission. In July, 1989, He began
to reveal parts of that mission:
"My dear one, My Heart is yours for you have
taken My Heart. I am your Lord. I am your Savior. There is much in store for
you which I desire. There will be no mistake that I have chosen you to
complete My request which shall be made known to you. My people wonder how so
many can receive messages. They truly think only one or two at the most could
be chosen, and they struggle with this. It is because they
created standards on how their Lord God should work. I tell you, all my people
are blessed, and many hear My words. But it is true that I have chosen My one
to work completely through, and as I have said to you in the past, 'My one is
you.' Remain quiet and loving….I am hiding you until it is the perfect
time." (Private Our Lord, July 16,
1989)
"My dear one, you know now how you will be used
as my servant, My child of mercy. As I have revealed to you tonight, you shall
restore the dignity which My people are seeking and lack
currently. My Mercy shall flow from you, and My dear people shall tangibly
touch Me through you…..You do not realize fully yet at this time how great My
Mercy shall be. You shall see how vital you shall be as a source of My
Mercy." (Private, July 26, 1989)
"You were created to fulfill the mission of My
Mercy, to carry out My Mission. This mission will be done as I wish, not as
what you might expect. That is why you feel alone and are alone
often, because I felt and was alone many times. Not until you are gone will
they know the Truth of your words and My Mission." (Private Our Lord, August 4, 1990)
But
even before this, in June of 1988 near the end of Gianna's first pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia,
while praying in front of the statue of Our Lady in St. James Catholic Church
in the village, Our Lady spoke to Gianna:
"I am going home with you, to your home. Once
you were like a lost lamb, and now you are found. You will do great things,
and many will come to you. It is time for the mission to begin. Do not
worry; I am with you. I will guide you and protect you. Everything will be
for the glory of God." (Our Lady to Gianna in Medjugorje, June, 1988)
It was not until later in 1990 and in 1991 that Our
Lord began to further define some of the elements of His Mission,
especially those involving healthcare to the poor:
"You will fulfill My Mission, for My Mission is
your mission. I asked you and continue to ask you to restore dignity to My
people. My poor and downtrodden have little or no dignity. They are of mankind
but do not have the respect of mankind….I ask you to restore dignity and
respect to My poor by aiding them in their recovery by restoring their health….Bring
healthcare to them, to all, not just the select. Do not be
specific in your treatment, for all belong to Me….My Plan is great for only
great things come from the Father…..Begin small to sow the seeds of love firmly
planted by loving and restoring dignity to those in your community. Then your
love will expand to great lengths and metastasize across the
world. Many will be involved as proof that the Body of Christ consists of all
My people, not one. This is why you do not have the skills to
complete what is being established….Your time, my dear one, is not yet. I need
to keep you to the last moment for you will reveal and unveil the Truth of My
Plan." (Private Our Lord, Dec. 14,
1990) "I will make you righteous in
Me, and all will know that your delicate soul was created by Me for My Mission
of Mercy. My Divine Mercy and Love will transform you and flow out to all the
world. Rejoice, and never fear!" (JOM,

The Spouse
"It
was not you who chose Me, but I who chose you
and
appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain."
(Jn 15:16)
Following
a very difficult time in her personal life in 1990-91, God did not ask Gianna
to accept this mission alone, but offered her a mate. Through a series
of unfortunate and unexpected circumstances, both Gianna Talone and Michael
Sullivan found themselves divorced with annulments in hand, and both
contemplating religious vocations, when Our Lady brought them together in late
1992 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The subsequent year, on June 19, 1993, the Feast of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, they were married, and before year's end had
relocated to Emmitsburg, Maryland, at Our Lady's request, to help Her with an important
multi-faceted mission.
"Taking a risk for God is to leap with
unconditional Love towards Him in His call of Mercy for you, a mission placed
in your heart by God. Decide now for God. You will never regret your
decision." (Oct. 13, 1994)
Over
the ten years between 1994 and 2005 much occurred in the lives of Gianna and
Michael Sullivan to serve as preparation for the given mission. There was
parenthood; the evolution of mobile Mission of Mercy Healthcare program; the
closure of the Prayer Group at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg after
7 years of weekly gatherings with Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and the public
apparition; two personal meetings with John Paul II in 2000 & 2001, the
Commission of Enquiry and subsequent restrictions in 2001-2002; the
"death' experience of Michael from his extensive aortic dissection in
2002; and the resurgence of the Marian Prayer Group on private property
in 2004. Throughout this time, there never seemed to be any deviation in Our
Lady's desire and commitment to move forward in Her mission,
and she continually reminded Gianna and Michael of theirs. On their 10-year
wedding Anniversary in 2003, Our Lady of Emmitsburg discussed both her
own "fiat" as well as the "fiat" of Gianna
and Michael:
"I am proud to be your Mother and your friend. I
am proud to guide you and lead you to my Jesus. I am proud that you have said
"yes," because in my "fiat" I said "yes." As you
say "yes" in your "fiat," changes in the world will
happen; and all of humanity will never forget your names, your mission, and this
my Center of my Immaculate Heart. Because you are the ones who will never
leave me, you will never be forgotten in Heaven, even by those among you who
will not forgive." (Private OLOE, June 19, 2003)
"In your Sacrament you are blessed, and you must
know that this blessing is from God. Without either one of you, your mission
is lessened, because of how important you are to each other. The holy
family is "holy" when there are both father and mother and the
love of spouse. So it is important that you unite tremendously and fervently
and with a strong bond to defend each other and to move forward." (Private OLOE,
Jan. 24, 2005) "You
desire so to continue the mission of God….Know that you are good parents, that
your children love you, and that the mission will continue." (Private OLOE, Jan. 29, 2005) "There is so much to be done, and so few who
desire to do it. As you unite in Truth, you will see that just as in a puzzle
that is put together, each piece shall tell of a new tomorrow; and the
picture will then become complete for all who long for God." (Private OLOE, July 2, 2005)
On
April 12, 2002, Michael experienced an extensive thoracic aortic
dissection which required heroic hypothermic surgical techniques depriving his
entire body, including his brain, from perfusion of all blood and oxygen for 53
minutes. There was a 90% chance he would die in surgery and an even greater
chance, when he survived surgery, that he would be left with serious brain
damage or even brain death. On the four-year anniversary of Michael's aortic
dissection, Our Lady of Emmitsburg joyously announced:
"This day, my Michael Joseph, I celebrate your
life! I saw you face to face, as you did the Triune God. How glorious that
event! Yet, as you know, God sent you back, back to see and witness, and back
to change the world, to proclaim from the mountaintops the Truth, to protect
your family, and to protect my most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart." (Private OLOE,
April 12, 2006) "The
reason you returned to the soil of this earth, once again to walk and to serve
the poor, is only to draw more people into my most Sorrowful and Immaculate
Heart and to expose the Truth, the Truth of the tremendous sin which afflicts
my Church….So protect the Truth, my son; and you protect those whom you love,
that first being my most beloved daughter (Gianna) whom you will help
fulfill the mission for which she was asked by God Himself." (Private
OLOE, Mar. 4, 2006)
In speaking to Gianna, Our
Lady further spoke of Michael's role:
"Your husband trusts and believes so much that he
has already given his life once and would do so again". (Private OLOE,
July 9, 2006) "He
suffered, and died and came back, because his mission is only to fulfill the
plan of my most Immaculate Heart for the universe. He is a different man--a
man who walks in this world, but in his heart, a child who walks with God and
who defends the Truth….It is very rare that God allows one to come back; and
when that soul comes back, it is for a more glorious event for God. That event
will unfold!" (Private OLOE,
April. 12, 2007)
To
both Gianna and Michael, their familiarity with the fate of many of the
prophets of previous times is certainly a very human concern. But Our Lady
of Emmitsburg has always said:
"I know that you are concerned about the
well-being of your good health and your safety. In years past, many of my
prophets were also concerned, and many times they gave their lives for my Son,
for the Truth. But this is different. We're in a different time, and you have
been commissioned to do something different….So you never need to be concerned
about your safety or your life in this world, because God created you to
fulfill a mission. It does not matter what people say or think…The truth is
the Truth, and that will unfold! You must defend the Truth when it
becomes a controversy beyond reconciliation. You have to stand up for the
Truth. You must continue on in your mission…." (Private OLOE, July 3, 2008)
The Similarities with Jesus' Mission
Jesus
to His disciples:
"No
slave is greater than his master. If they persecuted Me,
they
will persecute you. If they kept my word,
they
will also keep yours."
(Jn 15:20)
During
that early period (1988-1991) of His Lessons to the world through Gianna, Our
Lord spoke much about God's Plan of salvation and redemption for mankind.
In describing the elements of His sorrowful Passion, He spoke of several
elements: His mental anguish, knowing that so few desired to
know His Father's goodness or to seek His glory; the loneliness,
the fear of being convicted by humanity and the abandonment
by the Father. He also described the elements of His temptations: the
temptation of exposing the glory which accompanied being the Savior
rather than accepting His Mission, to obediently die an atrocious death for the
salvation of humanity:
"Silent redemption was My mission, to suffer and save all men without
exposing the glory of the Truth until the final moment….In My weariness, so
many did not understand. Would they ever understand the Truth of My Father and
the eternal life available to them?…My words were merely 'words' to them.
Would they ever absorb them and rejoice in My Father? Was My suffering going
to be in vain? No! But the temptations tormented My Heart because that is what
man believed and what the evil one desired."

So
too has been the temptation over the last 20 years of this mission: balancing
a walk of silent abandonment with Our Lord's and Our Lady's commission to speak
and defend the Truth at all costs. The overwhelming need for change in
our world and the relentless obstacles placed in front of any effort to proceed
forward in this mission have often left Gianna and many of those who have
supported her in this mission for Our Lady feeling as if they had all been
forgotten by God. However, Our Lady would always come in times of need
and frustration to explain things and to rally on Her army:
"Your work is immense!...Even if man should forget you, you will never be
forgotten, for God has selected each one of you as one amongst many. Few are
chosen. So many are asked, and many try; but few chosen to fulfill God's
Divine Plan. For when it becomes difficult, so many scatter. Fear envelops
them when there is doubt and lack of their own interior signs and prayers answered."

"I
will say to God: Thou art my support. Why hast thou forgotten me?
And
why go I mourning, while my enemy afflicts me?
While
my bones are broken,
my
enemies who trouble me have reproached me;
While
they say to me day by day: 'Where is thy God?'
Why
art thou so downcast, O my soul?
And
why do you sigh within me? Hope in God!
For
I will still again be thanking Him,
in
the presence of my Savior and my God."
(Ps 42: 10-12)
OUR LADY'S MISSION
Elizabeth
to her cousin Mary:
"Blessed
are you who believed that
what was spoken to you by the Lord
would
be fulfilled."
(Lk 1:45)
It
is not just Our Lord who has a mission and who desires to share that mission
with humanity, but Our Lady too has a mission. In 1994 she began to
discuss her mission:
"It is my mission that the world know the
Truth and for no soul to be deceived." (Public OLOE, Sept. 22, 1994) "Attempting to gather souls by means of
apocalyptic fear is misleading and is not my mission from Heaven. All
that matters is how you love and the virtues you utilize to grow in His Love…It
is my desire to guide you in the way of Love and Mercy. I have mentioned the
consequences of a failing world without God and without Love. This is not to
cause fear, but to awaken souls and to protect them from destruction." (Public
OLOE, Feb. 6, 1997) "This
means He desires to reveal to you the mystery of His Love and to grace you with
the gift of living and sharing in His glory. This means the mission of your
life will be unveiled to you as you live in His Love." (Public OLOE, Jan. 6, 2000) "This is the most important part of your mission, my
Son's mission: "to restore dignity, healing through Love." As you
pray for each person and as you pray for all humanity, your prayers rise up to
God the Father, asking Him to save mankind, to rescue all precious souls so
that not even one goes left behind. As you do this, you also restore dignity,
healing through Love." (Private
OLOE, Aug. 10, 2003)
Our
Lord Himself in one of His early Lessons
to Gianna speaks of dignity:
"How do you restore dignity? Do
not seek vengeance with your tongues or be spiteful. Be free from contempt and
haughtiness. Be a teacher by your way of living. Preach by your deeds of a
holy life. Respect one another, and love one another with the purity of the
love you have for Me! Remember: The one who loves in purity will satisfy the
hunger of man and restore dignity. He or she will restore life where there was
death, and restore beauty where there was ugliness because of the lack of
dignity and love." (JOM, Vol I,
#78, Aug. 12, 1989)
Our Lady of Emmitsburg has continued to discuss our mission and
the protection we can anticipate:
"I ask you to be prudent and wise and to look
forward to a new beginning. I ask you to take courage and have strength
in the walk of my Son. Know that you are chosen for a great mission.
Know that you are protected in my most Immaculate Heart. Know most definitely
that there are changes to come. In those changes, I need your courage; and in
that courage, I need you to be part of my army. So I ask you to join in comradery." (Private OLOE,
Jan. 13, 2003)
In
the midst of an unfavorable response from the Archdiocesan Commission in 2002
and the Decree which prohibited the propagation of Our Lady's message on Church
property in the Diocese of Baltimore in 2003, Our Lady remained quite
confident and she instructs her children in ways that are contrary to the ways
of the world:
"The only way you can develop an intimate
relationship with God Almighty is by becoming 'little.' You must decrease in
all ways and He must increase in all ways. You must accept the enlightenment
of your weaknesses and embrace them, for it is in your weaknesses that you are
made powerful in the eyes of God."
(Public OLOE, July 15, 1999) "Do you understand the meaning of meekness, littleness
and simplicity? Seek the answers in these and replace them to their lawful
throne….It is the only way to gain power and rise to the top." (Pubic OLOE, July
22, 1999)
"There are so many people who desire to help in
the Plan of God; but in this important mission, it is essential that you
remain simple. In the simplicity of all your actions there shall lie
the fruitfulness and the Truth of God's desires. So just do as I have
asked….It is my intention, not only my desire, but my full intention, to move
forward to help the Church of my Son, to restore the Center of my most
Immaculate Heart, and to allow those, who desire to come but have been afraid,
to once again be welcomed here."
(Private OLOE, Sept. 16, 2003) "I invite all of you to be part of my most
important mission, the salvation of humanity. Each of you can be my mouthpiece
in those times when my voice is not being heard. You can be my loving embrace
when children do not allow me to embrace them in my arms. You can bear the
pain that I bear in my Heart when you see children walk away from the Truth,
rejecting all the graces that God so desires to give them…..You can be all of
who I am, giving guidance to those in need…..Your mission is not over, because
so much needs yet to be done within my Church." (Private OLOE, Jan. 30, 2004)
In
2003, even after the obstacles thrown in her path by the Church had surfaced, Our
Lady of Emmitsburg was yet inviting all to a new era which
she had for years been describing:
"Now we are in an era where all must join
together. Once again I invite you. Once again you have free choice because of
your free will….It is as a Mother who directs you solely and only to my Son
that I can invite and thank you, love you and protect you, and wrap you in my
most Immaculate Heart. My Center is here in Emmitsburg,
Maryland. This is my Center of my most Immaculate Heart. It
cannot be any other place, because I have chosen this place. I chose this
place because first my Son chose it, and here He is. Where He is, I am too.
Where I am and where He is, We invite you to join Us in the blessedness of the
Holy Trinity." (Private OLOE, Feb. 16, 2003)
And
in summary, Our Lady of Emmitsburg reassures all her children of the
reality of her mission to which she has invited her children, the
importance and urgency in that mission, and She alerts everyone to the
consequences of not "waking up" the Church and the world:
"Do not be afraid. Know that I am with you.
Know that in this time period you all must grow, and you must seek the Truth of
God….He will help you, and I will be with you. Know that my presence here and
all my messages have been gifts from Heaven, only to guide you closer to my
Son. All has been real, and here in that reality is where there shall
be a place for all children of the world to come to seek refuge, children of
God, children of faith and hope, little children of purity and love." (Private OLOE, Aug. 3, 2004)
"Know that the blessing and grace from God above
is upon you. His blanket is like a yoke on an ox which covers you and keeps
you safe. You will be led, and you will be safe….I see in your hearts and I
know the tribulation, the fear, the controversy and even the battles within
yourselves….All you have to do is give them to me and trust. Trust and
continue to trust." (Private OLOE, Aug. 31, 2005) "Know how important you are in God's
mission. I dedicated my life to the mission to which the Holy Spirit guided
me, that being my Son, your Redeemer. You must now dedicate your life to
fulfilling all that I have said." (Private OLOE, Mar. 31, 2008) "Alert
all nations! Make all know! Everyone should know so that no one can say,
'Lord, I did not know.' No, you must be the ones that say, 'Yes, God has
told you.'…Wake up, my children, for now the percentage of people in
this world who will survive continues to diminish. Go forward with my
blessings and those of Heaven to notify all the world." (Private OLOE, June 20, 2009)
I
heard the voice of the Lord saying,
"Whom
shall I send? Who will go for us?"
"Here
I am," I said. "Send me!"
And
He replied: "Go and say this to the people":
(Is 6:8)
"You shall
indeed hear but not understand.
You shall indeed
look, but never see.
Gross is the heart
of this people.
They will not hear
with their ears; they have closed their eyes,
so they may not
see with their eyes and hear with their ears
and understand
with their hearts and be converted, and I heal them."
(Acts 28:26-27, Is 6:9-10)
Our
Lady has said that there are 3
specific facets to this mission--that which relates to the poor and the
ordinary, to the Church, and to the Center of her
Immaculate Heart.
B. The Mission for the Poor and Ordinary
Jesus to the
young man:
"If you wish
to be perfect,
go, sell what you
have and give to the poor,
and you will have
treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow Me."
(Mt 19:21)
The
first phase of this mission involves the poor, and among them the ordinary
people who have lost their voice and influence in this modern, secular world:
Initially
Gianna founded Mission of Mercy, Inc. as a legal non-profit entity in Arizona in
1992, but failed to generate enough support to make it operational at that
time. After later that year meeting Dr. Michael Sullivan on pilgrimage in Scottsdale, AZ, they
married in 1993, and relocated near the Emmitsburg area at the request of Our
Lady to assist Her in Her mission for this country. Since 1994 the free
mobile healthcare operation has expanded to 4 states, MD, PA, AZ, and TX, and
is considering an expansion to CO within the next year. Between 1994 and 2010,
Mission of Mercy has served over 75,000 different patients in over 250,000
patient visits, dispensing over 500,000 free prescriptions and providing over
5100 dental procedures. Now over 650 volunteers and thousands of benefactors work
together to support this Mission of Mercy for the poor.
Our
Lady has spoken in general terms
about serving the less fortunate:
"Help the poor and the elderly and the young.
And if you have been blessed with resources of wealth, intellect, management
skills and graces to help His needy, then unite together and give to His less
fortunate. They suffer as representation of the humiliated Jesus." (Public OLOE, March 17, 1994)
And
She has also spoken directly to Gianna and Michael about the
significance of the works of Mission of Mercy:
"God chose you because He desired you. Your soul
was created by God the Father for a purpose; just as God chose both of you (Gianna &
Michael) for a purpose in marriage;
and just as God chose all of the family (the
Mission of Mercy family) for
His Works of Mercy, for a purpose. God chooses people who desire and are
willing to submit to His desire for Good, so that His Works of Mercy will
unfold in the fruition of His Plan." (Private OLOE, Feb. 5, 2005) "As
you continue to fulfill the mission of my Son, His Mission
of Mercy, then the credibility which becomes you through your humble ways and
your devotion will set the precedent for the world. This then will pave the
way for God when He intervenes as the Father of all and authenticates my
presence here." (Private OLOE, May 27, 2005) "You give to His work all of your hearts and
minds and your strengths. You attempt to persevere, to be cleansed and to
receive. There are many, many people in different organizations who are also
affected (by limited resources) during this time period. The difference between Mission of Mercy and others is that this ownership is not yours, it is my
Son's." (Private OLOE, Sept. 23, 2005)
"Your patron saint, St.
Frances Xavier Cabrini, is watching over my Son's Mission
of Mercy. With this being known, you can be at peace and move forward in the
direction that God desires and guides you. He has preserved His works and has
graciously given you the gifts to give Him the glory. As you know, at His
pleasure, Mission of Mercy could cease." (Private OLOE,
Nov. 13, 2006)
Among
the poor, Our Lord and Our Lady seem to have reserved a unique place in their
affection and concern for the ordinary people and have charged Gianna
to be their voice. In 2003 Our Lady reminded Gianna:
"You have been told from the very inception of
this mission that you speak for the 'ordinary people,' those who fall
through the cracks, those who have become indifferent, those who are not heard
or listened to, yet those who are seeking the Truth." (Private
OLOE, Oct. 7, 2003) "Is it not today the ordinary people who feel the most lost and who most
desire to be loved? You can be educated, you can be poor, you can be homeless,
and yet people will reach out to you. But the ordinary people no longer have a
voice." (Private OLOE, Jan 24, 2004) "There has to be someone who lives an ordinary life and
is treated like an ordinary person, who feels the pain of an ordinary person,
and who also reaches for the desire to be extraordinary, and who can speak out
to all those who are ordinary."(Private OLOE, Jan. 15, 2004)
"What has happened is that
those who are lowly, those who are the poorest of the poor, and
the ordinary people who today are losing their identity and voice in the
world, are being heard by God; and they will be raised to a far greater
place than those who have everything." (Private OLOE, Nov. 24, 2005)
I would like you to know this night that out of all
the places in the world, there is no place that is called the Center of my
Immaculate Heart. This is not just another site, not just another place where
people can go on pilgrimage. This is the Center of my Immaculate Heart.
Because of this, it is very much under attack. Make no mistake about it: I
am not leaving and what the importance of my Center is!….It is because you

of my Immaculate Heart is for all people; most importantly, those who are
ordinary, those who think and feel they have been forgotten, and those who are
looking for acceptance. This is why there is so much division, and why
