Introduction

Webster’s Dictionary defines “perseverance” as the act of continuing in some effort or course of action in spite of difficulty and/or opposition. The Catholic Online Dictionary places a much more specific and spiritual connotation on the definition as  “the act of remaining in the state of grace until the end of life. The Church teaches that it is impossible, without the special help of God, to persevere in the state of grace to the end….Final perseverance cannot be strictly merited, as though a person had a claim on dying in grace because he or she had been faithful all through life. Nevertheless it can, with unfailing success, be achieved by proper prayer, offered regularly and earnestly, in the state of grace.”

Throughout the Words of God the Father, the Lessons of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Messages of Our Lady of Emmitsburg—all given to the world through Gianna Talone Sullivan—there are two other words, “endurance” and “persistence,” that  are often used in conjunction with perseverance, or alone with slightly different nuances.  Endurance can be defined as the act of remaining firm under suffering or misfortune without yielding in spite of difficulty; and persistence as the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people and occurs beyond the usual or expected time frame.

It seems that we live in an era where these three qualities are of some value toward success in the eyes of the secular world, but often forgotten when visualized through the spiritual eyes of faith.  More often than not, the modern man and woman are looking for a “quick fix,” immediate gratification and God’s prompt and specific response to any of their prayers.  Unfortunately, that is not the usual way to progress on one’s spiritual journey, but rather through perseverance, endurance and persistence.

Prayer of St. Bonaventure for Perseverance

Pierce, O most sweet Lord Jesus, my inmost soul with the most joyous and healthful wound of Thy love, and with true, calm and most holy apostolic charity, that my soul may ever languish and melt with entire love and longing for Thee, may yearn for Thee and for thy courts, may long to be dissolved and to be with Thee.

Grant that my soul may hunger after Thee, the Bread of Angels, the refreshment of holy souls, our daily and super substantial bread, having all sweetness and savor and every delightful taste.

May my heart ever hunger after and feed upon Thee, Whom the angels desire to look upon, and may my inmost soul be filled with the sweetness of Thy savor; may it ever thirst for Thee, the fountain of life, the fountain of wisdom and knowledge, the fountain of eternal light, the torrent of pleasure, the fullness of the house of God; may it ever compass Thee, seek Thee, find Thee, run to Thee, come up to Thee, meditate on Thee, speak of Thee, and do all for the praise and glory of Thy name, with humility and discretion, with love and delight, with ease and affection, with perseverance to the end; and be Thou alone ever my hope, my entire confidence, my riches, my delight, my pleasure, my joy, my rest and tranquility, my peace, my sweetness, my food, my refreshment, my refuge, my help, my wisdom, my portion, my possession, my treasure; in Whom may my mind and my heart be ever fixed and firm and rooted immovably. Amen.
(St. Bonaventure, Italian Franciscan Bishop and Doctor of the Church, 1221-1274)

“…Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,

and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us….”

(Heb 12:1)

Perseverance:  Part 4

The Lack of Perseverance
And Jesus answering, said:

“O faithless and perverse generation,

how long shall I be with you and endure you?”

(Lk 9:41)

The very existence of the virtue of perseverance would suggest that there is a state of the mind and heart in which there could be a lack of perseverance.  What would this look like?  What would be its consequences—for us and for God’s Plan?  Our Lord in His Lessons to the world attributes much of this to the lack of faith in so much of humanity.  This lack of faith results in people then continuing to immerse themselves in sin without even recognizing their guilt, let alone asking for forgiveness.  Their inability to see the need for their own forgiveness makes it impossible to see the need to forgive others, and the cycle of anger and judgmentalism continues.  The only way out of this vicious cycle lies in God’s Mercy:

“…Why do My people struggle so in their faith?  I have promised them gifts of peace and strength and protection, yet they struggle.  They do not persevere. The smallest trauma weakens their security and trust.  That is because of their weak faith.  My Faith is your power!  Use the gift of your faith.  Your struggles do not come from Me.  Your struggles are your passions and desires….Stop judging what others are doing to you in creating conflicts.  Focus on Me and on what I planned for you….If you love Me and trust Me, you will walk in your faith with Me and stop causing yourself inner harm.  Your struggles are those you create and allow!....”  (JOM, Vol II, #46, Feb. 18, 1990, Use Your Faith)

“…If you sin, admit your guilt, ask for forgiveness, and return back to Me!  Immerse yourselves in My Mercy.  I will redeem you.  Have Mercy and compassion on your offenders. Pray for them and those of evil ways who tread with guilt.  Pardon their sins, for the remnant of their inheritance is in My Hands.  Do not persist in anger or pass judgment.  Have Mercy!...”  (JOM, Vol IV, #92, Sept. 15, 1992, Mercy)

“…The discourse of sinners is hateful,

and their laughter is at the pleasures of sin….”

(Sir 27:14)

Our Lady of Emmitsburg acknowledges that there are many who desire to know her Son; however, desire is not enough, and lukewarmness is not a virtue.  They become bogged down with all of humanity’s temptations and vices.  Many people presume that an all-merciful God will rescue them and that Our Lady’s warnings are of little significance.  They do not truly desire to change and conform to God’s Law or be held accountable by the consequences of ignoring it.  Unfortunately, far too many remain blinded in their own little world which ultimately turns out to be empty and without Love:

“…Lukewarm hearts are the ones which afflict my Son’s Most Sacred Heart.  They are disinterested and indifferent.  The temporal needs are far greater in their eyes than eternal needs.  Unless these lukewarm hearts practice prayer daily and exercise perseverance in trials, they will turn into cold stone hearts….”  (Public OLOE, Feb. 9, 1995)

“…All saints began their conversion by prayer,

and through prayer they persevered.

All the damned were lost because they neglected prayer….”

(St. John Vianney, + 1859, French parish priest, mystic and confessor)

“…In a world today, masked by tremendous confusion and controversy, there are many who desire to know my Son.  However, through their own free wills they do not have the perseverance, determination and conviction to follow through with their gift of Faith, a gift that comes freely from God….It sounds very simple, but how difficult the task; not only due to original sin, but through humanity’s vices, tribulations and temptations, spiritual pride and vanity, jealousy and greed….”  (Private OLOE, May 2, 2004)

“…There are many people who truly take for granted that I am the Mother of God and the here I am, coming to you.  Yet, they go on with their everyday activities, thinking that life will go on and that when the time comes for them to be rescued, God Himself will be there for them.  What they do not realize is that there are many other factors:  one being whether or not they blaspheme the Holy Spirit; and others being whether or not they really desire to conform to a life in God, a life without sin; whether or not they desire to change and to join in the momentum of going the opposite direction of the world; whether or not they are willing to go the other way, to be pure and chaste, to speak for the Truth, to take whatever consequences are necessary, and to persevere through persecutions…Yes, they ask for what they desire; and yes, my Son oftentimes gives them more than what is necessary; and their lack of gratitude is yet another element….”  (Private OLOE, Nov. 29, 2005)

“…There is tremendous beauty in Creation, given to all people.  There are many invitations to hope and happiness.  If you walk among those in the world, pay attention and you will see so many people preoccupied with walking, either as an athletic endeavor or for some other reason.  However, there are few of them walking who realize that they are preoccupied only with their own little world.

“Truly, they are filled with a tremendous void, and in that void they are lacking Love.  They think they know and have everything so as to be amongst an elite group, but the void is empty.  It is a big void, a big emptiness, emptiness of their own self, their own joy and their own peace.  They lack self-sufficiency, perseverance and discernment….”  (Private OLOE, Dec. 22, 2005)

“…But because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold, not hot,

I will begin to vomit thee out of my mouth….”

(Rev 3:16)

Perseverance in Comradery and Unity

We read in John’s Gospel that Our Lord, realizing the human need for a sense of community and love relationships in fostering perseverance, before He died promised His disciples that:

“…I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you….

I have told you this while I am with you.

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My Name—

He will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you….”

(Jn 14:18,25-26)

And it is true that, certainly through the eyes of faith, we are never alone.  But in God’s Plan, as outlined in the Book of Genesis, God did not expect Adam to begin his mission with God alone, and nor does He expect us now to complete our mission here on earth alone, but with the help and support and love of not only a spouse (in some cases), but also that of families, relatives and friends (and even some enemies), clergy and religious, directors and superiors, prayer warriors and victim souls, our guardian angels and the entire Communion of Saints.  It is in this unity of intention, prayer and love that God’s power resides and that we are all victorious:

“…And the Lord God said:

It is not good for man to be alone:

let us make him a help like unto himself…..”

(Gen 2:18)

As recently as August, 2010, Our Lady of Emmitsburg has warned that “all there is time for is to love and unify.”  It is not surprising that she has encouraged so strongly family prayer and prayer partners and groups.  Nor is it surprising that if Our Lady is calling us to unify, then the evil one most assuredly is doing everything in its power to divide and destroy all marriages, families, friendships, comradery and alliances, infiltrating them with doubt, anger, jealousy, distrust, confusion, deception and chaos.

This is a journey that humanity has been walking for several millennia, and for over two centuries during this Age of Mary; and now, as we approach the end of this journey, God has promised to provide all that we need to help Him bring home all of His children, or at least as many as possible who will say “yes” to His Love and Mercy:

“…Each of you, as a child of God, has been chosen to fulfill God’s mission with all the qualities of a ‘little child’….Look forward to the new tomorrow, and yet persevere in what you have to do  today. Do not look back at what happened yesterday, and do not worry about tomorrow.  Just be grateful that you are where you are, and that the future will unfold in God’s Plan. It is there that you will find the joy to anticipate the future….”  (Private OLOE, Sept. 7, 2005)

“…You are all weak and you are all sinners; and in humility you can achieve all things because God becomes your strength.  You will persevere and be valiant, valiantly victorious….”  (Private OLOE. Nov. 27, 2005)

“…You must live the Way of God, not the way of the desires of your own hearts.  When you are corrected, you do not desire to be corrected because of the pain involved….What I desire you to know is that correction develops character, gives you strength and fortitude, perseverance and temperance, and allows you to rise to a new level….”  (Public OLOE, Dec. 24, 2002)

“…I know that you have tried with all your heart, and that you have asked for assistance, prudence, discernment and perseverance….God desires comradery and health and a strong army, so you are here.  No matter where you are in the world, you are here; but what I need you to do now is to be bold and to move forward….In your mind you may have a vision of how things will unfold at that time and what will happen.  Don’t!   You have no idea of the omnipotence of God and how it will all unfold!  This is why, in the most humble part of your soul, you must listen and act.  Act accordingly, because many people think they know, and they do not.  But how things unfold and the humility that you take as your armor with Love , are what will protect you and all who come….Always say this prayer:

“We praise you, we bless you, we thank you, we love you.

Yes, we beg to be as you desire us to be….”

(Private OLOE, Sept. 5, 2010)

It is very difficult for those of us who are relatively comfortable to believe that we are all living in a time when “business is not going to go on as usual.”  Our Lady of Emmitsburg reminds us that through Biblical prophecy and in private revelation we have been told that dramatic changes in the world will cause many to lose their lives and even their souls, that there is a need for a seal of protection, and that our only recourse to mitigating the pain and suffering, even if they can no longer be prevented, is prayer.  Yes, only prayer—not our position, wealth, knowledge, race, creed or even hard work—will allow us to withstand the onslaught of persecution and death.  Only as families and in nests of prayer all over the world, through Eucharistic Adoration and in humility, will we come to know Jesus and be able to persevere to the end:

“…Now we are in a time, a time when those who are wise and those gifted with prudence, perseverance and fortitude must stick together and must reason and direct, most importantly, within their own intimate families; because many shall be lost and many shall die, but many shall live and a few shall be chosen to be leaders.  Because you have been blessed with my presence, you have been gifted by God Himself with the seal of His protection….When you are gifted and blessed, expect to give more….”  (Private OLOE, Mar. 19, 2003)

“Little ones, something big is about to embark upon this world, something very big.  So if you are invited to do things for the Lord, you must move ahead.  You must persevere in the things you have been trying and must devoutly remain faithful to my Immaculate Heart, fighting all the evil around you.  What I am saying is that you must rally on, joining together in comradery, faithfulness, commitment and dedication to God the Father….You were given to each other, all of you as gifts, each one of you, each and every one of you.  So if you rely on your gifts of comradery and friendship, you will be surrounded by the Peace and the protection of God….”  (Private OLOE, June 22, 2004)

“…I invite you to persevere and to all join together in Love, because it is as a community that you make the difference, not as one but as many.  It is important that all people join together and work together and love one another.  There is enough hardship, slander and malice from other sources of evil who would desire and be pleased to see all the good works that you do for my Son’s greater glory come to an end.  What stops this is when people join together in prayer and in unity.  It is then that the good works of Love which flow through you make the difference in changing bad to good….”  (Private OLOE, Oct. 8, 2005)

“Little ones, we are on a journey.  This journey is a battle of good against evil….Join together.  Do not allow any forces to divert your attention from the Truth; and this Truth must be founded in prayer.  At the center must be prayer, with the focus being on my Son.  If you do this, I promise you the seal of protection against all evil will be upon you….

“…Pray together.  Pray as a family…, so that the seal of protection may be upon your family.  Only you know in your heart where my Son is leading you.  I am here to encourage you and to rally you on to persevere and to be cleansed with my Son’s Most Precious Blood, so that your soul may be sanctified in His Most Glorious Name….”  (Private OLOE, Nov. 19, 2005)

“..Work together and be a network of Love and Mercy.  Form nests of prayer all over the world to fill the emptiness and loneliness in the lives of many people….Through Eucharistic Adoration you will come to know yourself and Jesus more intimately….In your works give praise to Jesus.  Do all things with humility and affection…..Jesus is your delight and your freedom.  Through Him you will persevere to the end of your journey….”  (Public OLOE, Aug. 13, 1998)

“…And you shall be hated by all men for My Name's sake,

but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved….”

(Mt 10:22)

It was notour plan to be living during this unique time in salvation history, nor do we merit any special treatment over any of God’s other children. But we are here and He is coming again, and many of us will live to see those times—times in which we are being asked to be unconditionally open to God’s grace so as to allow Him to dwell in us and we in Him, times to work in unity and comradery not only our for own salvation, but for that of all people of all nations:

“…Here He is.  Here you are.  In union with the Holy Trinity, God graces you with the gift of Life, the comradery of friendship, the hope for a new tomorrow, the perseverance and fortitude to follow through in working together, and the grace to avoid evil.  How lucky you are that God Himself has come to you, not just for one, but for all….”   (Private OLOE, Feb. 2, 2004)

“…All will go well….I am very grateful and I love you for your perseverance and your endurance, for your listening to my words in the past, for your joining together and upholding one another in friendship, comradery, prayer, and in working together outlining the Truth….”  (Private OLOE, Jan. 17, 2007)

“…I encourage you to have the courage to move on, to be strong, to do all that you can for God, and to give everything you do for His glory….

“…We must rally everyone together and give everyone the opportunity to grow, to love and to serve in charity, with compassion, with gentleness, but with strength and fortitude.  Persevere in all that you do, and reach out to all peoples of all nations; for all are loved by God….We are nothing, but He is everything; and the less we become, the more He becomes in us….”  (Private OLOE, Sept. 21, 2009)

“…And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge,

and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains,

and have not charity,

I am nothing….”

(1 Cor 13:22)

Perseverance:  The Closing

“Blessed be the name of God from age to age,
for wisdom and power are His.
He changes times and seasons,
    deposes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding.

He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what is in the darkness,
    and light dwells with him.”

(Dan 2:20-22)

Certainly here in Emmitsburg, and most probably at all authentic sites of Our Lady’s apparitions and messages throughout the world and throughout history, many obstacles and obstructions have been placed in the path of the faithful by not only uninformed or jealous good lay people and clergy, but also by the overt enemies of God.  To not see this type of response in today’s world might even detract from the authenticity.  However, Our Lady of Emmitsburg promises thatchange is coming, that our perseverance and surrender to God’s Will will pay off, and that this effort brings forth not only her sincere gratitude, but the blessings of the Child Jesus for all eternity:

“…It will be a time, sooner than you know, that all situations here will change.  As they change, so many people will come; and as they come, they will rally for my Son and praise His Holy Name.  And all of you can put the Crown on His Head, you the precious jewels in the Crown of my Son….Thank you for your endurance, your perseverance, your surrendering and being resigned to God’s will….It is a hard task indeed, but a truly blessed one….”  (Private OLOE, Mar. 3, 2004)

“…Ponder all the graces that you have received from my Son….I strongly urge each of you to take the time quietly and individually to say to God Almighty, ‘Thank you for loving me and for giving me the Light, the Truth and the grace to respond; the perseverance, the fortitude and the courage to be a child of God.’  Many are invited but few accept.  All of the future now rests with you and with others in prayer in the fulfillment of the graces which my spouse, the Holy Spirit, is there to bestow upon you and reveal to the world….Peace to all those who continue to pray, not knowing, not hearing, and  not realizing the reception of His grace….”  (Private OLOE, July 29, 2003)

“Little ones, that is what you are:  ‘Little’ children trying to be big grown-ups in a world where you do not belong.  You are little children, and I tuck you in my Heart. No matter what the world may think of you or even do to you, no one can give you the freedom that my Son can.  At all costs, you through your efforts and perseverance will receive a great reward, far greater than any earthly reward you have ever gained or will gain….”  (Private OLOE, Dec. 30, 2008)

“…Little ones,…I thank you….I give to you all of my Immaculate Heart because you radiate the Truth, the Divine Presence, the prudence and wisdom, the ambience and omnipotence of God.  As you go forward, people draw to you.  As they draw to you, you give to them the Love of Christ Himself.  As you get closer to my Son, you will become even more ‘little’ and will give more and more of yourself in Love….”  (Private OLOE, Mar. 3, 2004)

“…Be strong and take courage….You have been dedicated to the Covenant of the Two Hearts.  Our Hearts are submerged within one another.  Division always occurs where my presence is; but you have remained faithful and have persevered, like gold tested in fire….My purpose here is to bring all children to God, especially here in this country….I desire all children to know about this precious moment that they have with me and my Son.  But it is not for just a simple moment, not for just a passing era.  It is for eternity, for We are not leaving!  Many shall come and go, but We will stay!...”  (Private OLOE, April 8, 2006)

“…Continue to pray and work towards a new tomorrow when temptations will not affect you.  Use every occasion to become perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect by being humble, bearing difficulties with love, being merciful and doing penance.  Strive now to be holy and pure of heart, like a little child, so you will be prepared to slay evil through love and littleness in the moment of confrontation and truth; and then triumph with your Savior.  There will be a time of peace and no disease, a time and place where every human being will live in unity and come to know the Truth of Jesus through a Eucharistic Reign.  Every human being will understand and embrace mercy and will know the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.  Every heart will be enlightened and healed of brokenness, slander, malice and anger….Life will flourish, and the ways of the Child Jesus will renew your hearts and fill you with joy…Pray and persevere!...”   (Public OLOE, Mar. 9, 2000)

“…So be at peace, and know that I love you….The blessing of the Child Jesus is yours forever—yours forever as you desire to receive as He gives….The more you give of yourself to Him, the more you receive.  The mystery of Light and Wisdom will inebriate you so that you will truly understand the meaning of my words….”  (Private OLOE, Dec. 30, 2008)

“…She made among human beings an eternal foundation,
and among their descendants she will abide faithfully.
To fear the Lord is fullness of wisdom;
    she inebriates mortals with her fruits;
she fills their whole house with desirable goods,
and their storehouses with her produce….”

(Sirach 1:15-17)

The Child Jesus
“…The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

and the leopard shall lie down with the kid.

The calf and the lion, and the sheep shall abide together,

and a little Child shall lead them….”

(Is 11:6)

The spiritual Eucharistic Reign of Jesus and the Era of Peace are not foreign to many of the end times prophesies, but unique to what has been promised by Our Lady of Emmitsburg is the role of the Child Jesus during these times.  She has stated several times that she comes here with the Child Jesus as a refuge for all children, not only the young in age, but all those with childlike hearts.

In a very rare occurrence, during an apparition with Our Lady of Emmitsburg still present, Gianna briefly saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus, followed almost immediately by the presence of the Child Jesus, standing with His Mother, appearing as if he might be 10-11 years of age, and speaking to us through Gianna.  He Himself offered a call to unity and His promise to lead us into the Era of Peace.  Hopefully, our response will be “yes,” and we can now courageously move forward together, drawing with us all God’s children home to their Father:

”…Be brave and steadfast.  Unite…..Know that victory is at hand. I have called all of you to lead others into this next era, a very important era for joining together and leading others into a period of relaxation
(Era of Peace) where God the Father, Son & Holy Spirit will be glorified and will give glory to their entire Creation.  Unite together.   Never leave one another.  Know that walking hand in hand with you is the Child, and that Child shall lead you…”  (Child Jesus to Gianna, Private, Jan. 21, 2006)

“A great sign appeared in the sky,

a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet,

and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

She was with child…She gave birth to a male child,

destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.

Her child was caught up to God and His Throne….”

(Rev 12:1-2, 5)

Prayer for Courage

Dear God, give me courage,
for perhaps I lack it more than anything else.

I need courage before men against their threats
and against their seductions.
I need courage to bear unkindness,
mockery, contradiction.
I need courage to fight against the devil,
against terrors and troubles, temptations,
attractions, darkness and false lights,
against tears, depression, and above all fear.
I need Your help, dear God.

Strengthen me with Your love and Your grace.
Console me with Your blessed Presence
and grant me the courage to persevere
until we are with You forever in Heaven.
