The Weapons against Evil

Prayer, Faith and Charity

Humanity has not been left helpless, at the mercy of the insurmountable forces of evil and without the tools and the models to help us ultimately be victorious.  Our Lord in His Last Supper discourse promised:

“…I will not leave you orphans….

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in My Name—

He will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.

Peace I leave with you; My Peace I give to you.

Not as the world gives do I give it to you….

I am going away and I will come back to you….”

(Jn 14: 18, 26-28)

And it is that same Spirit of Whom the prophet Isaiah spoke:

“…The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him:

a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding;

a Spirit of counsel and of strength;

a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord,

and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord….”

(Is 11:2-3)

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta tells how this plays out then in the fruitfulness of our very own lives:

“The fruit of silence is prayer.

The fruit of prayer is faith.

The fruit of faith is love.

The fruit of love is service.

The fruit of service is peace.”

(Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, 1910-1997)

The Weapons against Evil, Part 7B  Faith

The Catholic Dictionary defines “faith” as the acceptance of the word of another, trusting that the other knows what he/she is saying and is honest in telling the truth. The basic motive of all faith is the authority (or the right to be believed) of the one who is speaking.  This authority should possess an adequate knowledge of what he/she is talking about, and the integrity in not wanting to deceive.  It is called divine faith when the one believed is God, and human faith when the persons believed are human beings.  With respect to private revelation, it is even more complicated, because it involves both—a belief in God or His supernatural designate as the source (such as Our Lady, the Saints or the Angels), and often a human being as the messenger.

“…For by grace you have been saved through faith,

and this is not from you;

it is the gift of God….”

(Eph 2:8)

In His Words to the world through Gianna Talone Sullivan, God the Father makes it very clear to all of His “Children of Humanity” that all we have is a gift.  Faith is a gift; faith is a grace!  But so too is free will:

The Words of God the Father

Children of Humanity,

“You have been given an opportunity in Christianity, and your own world is dwindling away.  Because of your free will, there is only so much that I will force on you.  I give you gifts, and I protect you.  At a moment’s plea, I come to grasp you and save you; but I cannot force more than that.  If you do not desire the Truth and the Peace and the gift of Faith to live, then you are open to many other sources of persuasion….”  (GTF, Mar. 8, 2008)  All are invited; but few truly choose to walk, to be guided, and to live in Faith….So children of faith…, come to know the Truth of salvation and redemption, and the Truth of sacrifice, of Love and of total abandonment to My Will, even to the point of death.  (GTF, Feb. 8, 2006)  You must believe and live your faith, for the Truth will be revealed.  Guard yourself in My Truth, and be confident so you will be able to be protected in all ways….”  (GTF, Feb. 8, 2008)

“…I claimed you in the beginning.  I created you.  I sent you forth.  I gave you free will.  I once again called you back.  Many came, most left.  Those who came, once again, like in the beginning, must be purified and cleansed to give them a vision of hope for a new tomorrow.

“Make no mistake:  All the gifts that you have been given are blessings and are gifts, not of your own merit, but from my Throne of Mercy.  To you who choose not to receive them, no one can say that ‘I am not worthy’, because all are not worthy….

“If you think that this time is difficult now, wait till you see how most difficult it will be.  If you who pray now and know or assume that you know the truth—what is right and what is wrong—and cannot unite, then what do you think the future will bring when more confusion and chaos and the subtleties of evilness infiltrate to divide all of you?  ….

“Beware, and be holy.  Forgive and forget; and do not pay attention to trivial assaults, but look to the main assault that is about to be exposed….

“All are welcome.  Few follow through.  The harvest is full.  The laborers are few.  Beware, beware, beware!  You do not know what surrounds you.  Beware, and have hope with love, life in your vocation, and truth.”  (GTF, Dec. 8, 2008)

“…Who is the Giver?  We all know who the receivers are.  But who truly gives back to Me?
”…In the days of Noah, O’ yes My Noah, he was a difficult person.  He argued all the time.  They mocked him, persecuted him and alienated him and his family.  He would say, ‘When? When will God, Abba?  When, Yahweh, are you coming?  Look, I’m a fool.  You have made me a fool.’  He was not a fool when the flood came, was he?  Why? Because He never diverted in the midst of his sorrow from the truth that was to come.

O’ foolish nation, one that I gave to and created for good!  Look what free will has done.  Can you imagine what it would be like without the Sacrificial Lamb of my Son?  Few shall live, many will die.  Pray for those who will die because ‘Where will they go?’  Where their heart is, so too is their treasure….

O’ children of humanity, you have a choice.  You could receive; and the time you have to receive has been extended.  But in the situation at hand, so few really care.  Very few desire to receive….It is worse than in the days of Noah.

Treasure these words in your hearts and do not allow the flame to go out, for this is the only Light of wisdom and knowledge you may be receiving.”
(GTF, June 21, 2009)

An Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that you are One God in three divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches, because you have revealed them, Who can neither deceive nor be deceived.  Amen.

Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Characteristics of Faith

Faith is a grace

153      When St. Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus declared to him that this revelation did not come “from flesh and blood,” but from “my Father who is in heaven.” Faith is a gift of God, a supernatural virtue infused by him. Before this faith can be exercised, man must have the grace of God to move and assist him; he must have the interior helps of the Holy Spirit, who moves the heart and converts it to God, who opens the eyes of the mind and makes it easy for all to accept and believe the truth.

Faith is a human act

154      Believing is possible only by grace and the interior helps of the Holy  Spirit. But it is no less true that believing is an authentically human act. Trusting in God and cleaving to the truths he has revealed are contrary neither to human freedom nor to human reason….

155    In faith, the human intellect and will cooperate with divine grace….

Faith and understanding

156    What moves us to believe is not the fact that revealed truths appear as true and intelligible in the light of our natural reason: we believe because of the authority of God himself who reveals them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived.  So that the submission of our faith might nevertheless be in accordance with reason, God willed that external proofs of his Revelation should be joined to the internal helps of the Holy Spirit….

157   Faith is certain. It is more certain than all human knowledge  because it is founded on the very word of God who cannot lie….

158   Faith seeks understanding:  it is intrinsic to faith that a believer  desires to know better the One in whom he has put his faith and to understand better what He has revealed; a more penetrating knowledge will in turn call forth a greater faith, increasingly set afire by love….

159    Faith and science:  Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth.  Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge, provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God….

The freedom of faith

160      To be human, man’s response to God by faith must be free, and... therefore nobody is to be forced to embrace the faith against his will. The act of faith is of its very nature a free act.  God calls men to serve him in spirit and in truth. Consequently they are bound to him in conscience, but not coerced....

The necessity of faith

161      Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation.

Perseverance in faith

162       Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to man. We can lose this priceless gift, as St. Paul indicated to St. Timothy: “Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith” .…

163       Faith makes us taste in advance the light of the beatific vision, the goal of our journey here below….

Providence and the Scandal of Evil

309    God the Father almighty, the Creator of the ordered and good world, cares for all his creatures, why does evil exist? To this question, as pressing as it is unavoidable and as painful as it is mysterious, no quick answer will suffice. Only Christian faith as a whole constitutes the answer to this question: the goodness of creation, the drama of sin, and the patient love of God who comes to meet man by his covenants, the redemptive Incarnation of his Son, his gift of the Spirit, his gathering of the Church, the power of the sacraments, and his call to a blessed life to which free creatures are invited to consent in advance, but from which, by a terrible mystery, they can also turn away in advance. There is not a single aspect of the Christian message that is not in part an answer to the question of evil…..

You shall worship the Lord your God and Him alone you shall serve.

2087         Our moral life has its source in faith in God who reveals his love to us. St. Paul speaks of the “obedience of faith”9 as our first obligation. He shows that “ignorance of God” is the principle and explanation of all moral deviations. Our duty toward God is to believe in him and to bear witness to him.

2088         The  first commandment requires us to nourish and protect our faith with prudence and vigilance, and to reject everything that is opposed to it. There are various ways of sinning against faith:

Voluntary doubt about the faith disregards or refuses to hold as true what God has revealed and the Church proposes for belief. Involuntary doubt refers to hesitation in believing, difficulty in overcoming objections connected with the faith, or also anxiety aroused by its obscurity. If deliberately cultivated doubt can lead to spiritual blindness.

2089     Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.

Let us draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith,

having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience,

and our bodies washed with clean water.”

(Heb 10:22)

“Here is what sustains the holy ones

who keep God’s commandments and their faith in Jesus.”

(Rev 14:12)

In His Lessons to the world, Our Lord Jesus Christ emphasizes the power that rests in our living the faith, describing it as one of the weapons in our arsenal against evil.  However, as a weapon, it can only be fruitful if it brings about love and unity, not weakness and betrayal.  Our faith defines what we are, what we desire, and how vulnerable we are to the deception of the evil one.  The choice remains ours, but time is short.  Holiness is the measure:

“…Always be strong and live in your faith.  It is your power.  You, My young ones, protect your family with prayer.  You are the new tomorrow!  Do not allow the evil one to deprive you of your weapons.  He wishes for you to think you are weak, so that he can sneak into your house and betray your heart by slaying it with your own weapon.  Join in family love and unity.  Be holy!...”  (JOM, Vol II, #52, Mar. 24, 1990, Truth and Honesty)

“…If you acknowledge and accept the evil one, you are of dark spirit!  What you choose to acknowledge by faith is what you are.  If you wish to come to Me, know My Word and acknowledge Me by following My Word.  If you wish to go the evil way, then I shall allow you to bite into darkness and know the deceit of the evil one’s words….All who desire Me, come forward!  Say ‘yes’ to Me, and invite Me into your heart before it is too late and you have been bitten by the evil one….”   (JOM, Vol II, #43, Feb. 6, 1990, Follow the Word)

Unfortunately, living in the Divine Will does not at all insure that one’s life will be without trials and tribulations.  God the Father strongly warns His children not to doubt, and Our Lord explains the value of such obstacles:

God the Father:

“It is better to believe than to doubt; for once you doubt, you allow forces to enter that will betray you and deceive you.  If you doubt, then the enemy can overpower you, as has happened throughout history, even to My beloved ones.  In times of war with the Philistines, when my beloved ones were to protect my Ark, they doubted and were overthrown.  And yes, the Ark went into the hands of the enemy.”  (GTF, Feb. 8, 2008; cf. Sam 4:1-11)

          Our Lord Jesus Christ:

“The battle in the Heavens is against evil; and much prayer, fidelity to faithfulness, and simplicity in surrendering to God are the powerful tools of victory….When many of My little children see continual division and brokenness, they begin to doubt whether their prayers are to any avail.  Consequently, they stop praying because of their lack of faith and trust in My Word(JOM, Vol V, #16, Sept. 9, 1995)  Evil does exist, and its subtleties linger and fall prey on any soul complacent or indifferent to unconditional love and mercy.  No doubt My servants will suffer interiorly and perhaps exteriorly because of the current conditions of the world which do not render love without self-gain….I have invited My people to follow the Truth of My Way.  I have told my people that it takes time to change and not to wait to the last moment.  My Love is not a project meeting a deadline.  My Love is a Way of life, an ongoing peace, harmony, unity, freedom and joy….So few listened to My words.  Many are still not listening….This lack of genuine love and service will only be manifested in the current devastations existing in the world….But many of My beloved ones are gaining the knowledge of Truth from asking My assistance and giving their souls unconditionally to My care, Love and Mercy.  There is hope for the future of mankind, a hope founded in Love.  For evil’s reign is close to an end!”  (JOM, Vol 5, #28, Nov. 2. 1995)

“…We have hope in God that He will soon have mercy on us

and will gather us from everywhere under heaven into His holy place,

for he has rescued us from great evils and has purified the place….”

(2Mac 2:18)

The Faith of Our Mother

“…Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

May it be done to me according to your word….”

(Lk 1:38)

Following an invitation from God Almighty, it was the faith of a young, poor, simple virgin girl from Nazareth that set God’s Plan in motion.  Now, as Queen of Heaven and Earth she, Our Lady of Emmitsburg, warns of her adversary’s plan, but assures us of the superiority of her Son’s Plan.  She emphasizes the role of faith in this battle and then speaks of some of the pitfalls—namely distraction and doubt—that might cause her children to fall.  She shares that by keeping our focus on God’s Love, as she did, we can truly become holy and inherit the reward God reserves for His saints.  It is a living faithfulness, not a stagnant knowledge of the faith, that will bring all things to fruition according to God’s time and pleasure:

Satan’s Plan

Jesus to Paul:

“…I send you to open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light

and from the power of Satan to God,

so that they may obtain forgiveness of sins and an inheritance

among those who have been consecrated by faith in Me.”

(Acts 26:18)

“…Freedom and Peace are what you have been gifted by God as tremendous blessings; and you have every opportunity to fully utilize the blessings you have received.  No doubt Satan has a plan for you, but the plan of my Son is greater; and no fear or evil spirit can destroy you unless you become distracted and allow the bondage to enter into the doorway of your soul.  Against this I have blessed you, and you have already been enlightened with the Truth of God’s Love.

“Today the world lives by Satanism in many aspects, more than by Christianity.  Many others believe that Satan does not exist, and the need for and the lack of prayer will only fuel the events that will lead your children astray.  Prayer must be central in your life; and God must be first or you cannot love, because you truly will not understand the meaning of it….”  (Private OLOE, June 17, 2010)

“…It is through Faith that all shall be renewed, because this is the country where I am on the soil where Satan has tried so desperately to disrupt my children and take them away.  Being on Satan’s turf, the only way for me to conquer Him is through Faith, through your Faith, your Trust and your Hope; and this will all be done according to God’s time and good pleasure….”  (Private OLOE, June 9, 2004)

Jesus to his disciples:

“Why are you terrified?  Do you not yet have faith?”

(Mk 4:40)

“…Give heed to me and answer me;

I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted….”

(Ps 55:2)

“…Put on the armor of God (Eph 6: 11-13)…There is no longer time to be distracted by anything.  All there is time for is to love and to unify; and in your actions of love, people will see the Truth.  Truth is so important, because within my most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, all things will be made new, for they will be made new within my Son….

“Already in the world there are too many people who no longer believe.  The apostasy is at hand.  People of various religions no longer even believe in God; and then what happens to their children?  They do not know God.  They are not baptized…” (Private OLOE, Aug. 21, 2010)

“I invite you to not be distracted, but to focus completely on God’s Love.  That is what evil would desire you to do:  to be distracted, to analyze, and to dissect down to its deepest level; while in that process, the most simplistic and humble and loving answer and solution lies unnoticed before your eyes.  Put the blinds around your eyes to the things of the world, and see the Light of God.  It is not necessary for anything other than that, so that into your heart His Love will penetrate and enlighten the Truth within you….”  (Private OLOE, Oct. 13, 2009)

“…I will sing of your steadfast Love, O Lord, forever;

with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations….”

(Ps 89:1)

Jesus to Peter:

“Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him,

and He said to him, “O’ you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

(Mt 14:31)

“…Your faith must be rooted with the firm confidence.  I am surprised that you would even doubt.  If you doubt, then you open doors for persecution.  You do not want the evil one to take anything away from you.  You must stand firm, and you must believe with all your heart, no matter what happens in the world.  Wherever you go, wherever you run to, I will be there; so it’s not necessary to go from place to place.  Stand firm at home, and here I am with you; for many people will come as I have promised.

“The signs of the times have revealed the end of an era is truly sooner than you think.  You can tell by what has been unfolding in the world….”   (Private OLOE, Aug. 21, 2010)

“…So stand firm, believe, and it will happen!  For I am not leaving; I am here to stay!  You will see how, when you thought things were bad, you endured and persevered; and through your fidelity and loyalty, change is happening.  You have been purged and tested in the fire by God the Father.  So rejoice and be glad, and live with joyful anticipation!  Otherwise, you too will just become lost and confused and will not see this most important event to unfold, because you have lost your focus….”   (Private OLOE, Aug. 15, 2010)

“…And if you doubt, then stand upright and say, ‘Yes, I believe!’  In the Name of Jesus, may His Precious Blood cover you.  Do not be afraid to say, ‘Be gone Satan!’  Stand firm and love.  No one can take you away from God unless you allow any evil forces to draw you.  They will wait for the most opportune time, and they will not stop until you tell them and show them through your faith that you are a righteous child of God—one of Light, one of Truth and one of Love!”  (Private OLOE, Aug. 15, 2010)

“…I know where you live, where the seat of Satan is:

and you hold fast my name, and hast not denied my faith….”

(Rev 2:13)

The Holiness of Saints

“…May the Lord make you increase

and abound in love for one another and for all,…

so as to strengthen your hearts,

to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father

at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His holy ones.”

(1Thes 3:12-13)

“…God will sustain you as you keep focused on Him.  See everything as the ‘coming of Jesus.’  Do not focus on all of your enemies and how they plot to destroy you, but focus on God’s Love and how through His goodness one saintly person can change the course of history.  Do not focus on all the evil in the world, but how God, through His goodness and His Divine Will, shall level the works of evil and balance everything with new growth.  Contemplate how your  sinful actions can be changed into actions of saints. There is no question of the amount of evil today in this world; but if you do not forgive, you will not be able to do God’s work….”  (Public OLOE, Nov. 13, 1997)

“…You cannot wear an external image of holiness.  God sees all things.  It is the spirit of your works and your living faith in God which will make you holy.   My little ones, all your hidden works will be judged.  You cannot hide from God.  All good and evil will be weeded out, and to everyone will be revealed the truth of their incentives and the state of their faith.  Graces flow out from my hands, little children, desiring to help you….”  (Public OLOE, June 9, 1994)

Faith can be a relatively sterile and inert gift that remains in the gift box, or it can be a fruitful and dynamic virtue that may be described as a holy faithfulness. Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said, "God has not called me to be successful; He has called me to be faithful."  It is such an importance that Our Lady of Emmitsburg gives to the virtue of faithfulness:

"Be very careful, because much of what is being said today in other areas is deception, and many are being deceived.  The most important thing that you can do is to remain faithful--faithful to the Church and the Sacraments, to yourself and to your prayer life--and to encourage yourself to be clean of vices, to challenge yourself to grow, and to forgive yourself so that you can help others.  Be very close to God!...But the Truth will come with the Triumph of His Cross, as it did in the past and all the way through to current times.  Those of you who have been devoted and loving and not presumptuous of your final fate, but humble and prayerful, and vigilant, will be able to welcome in a new era, fully trusting in God Who is all-merciful and all-glorious!  What a great reward for those who truly have ears to hear and eyes to see what is happening around you!"  (Private OLOE, Sept. 14, 2009)

"Beloved, we are God's children now;

what we shall be has not yet been revealed.

We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like Him,

for we shall see Him as He is."

(1Jn 3:2)

"If you believe with all your heart, it will happen. But you must not doubt.  You must believe with all your heart, because nothing is impossible with God.  The evil one would like you to fill your mind with distrust, and he would like you to believe this is all fallacy.  But you control your heart; and in your heart, all you must do is believe and not doubt, knowing that in good time--God's time--all fruition will come to the surface."  (Private OLOE, Jan. 15, 2009)

“…I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.

Then you will know the Lord….”

(Hos 2:21)

Faith Saves

“…But we are not among those who shrink back and so are lost,

but among those who have faith and so are saved….”

(Heb 10:39)

Just as St. John the Baptist has been called the “last of the Old Testament prophets,” so too has Our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, our Savior, been called the “last of the New Testament prophets.” She has chosen to use messengers in both ordinary and extraordinary ways, all according to God’s Will.  She has given to all those who have remained committed and faithful to Our Lady’s plan, both in Emmitsburg and throughout the world, a very special mission, especially as it relates to the United States; but most likely, as it would relate to any and all nations.  She encourages her children:

“I have told you, my little ones, that it would be Faith that would save this country and that my presence here dealt with those who had Faith in God…..For it is by Faith that you will conquer evil and be rewarded with all the tremendous gifts and graces of God; and through your good works, you will give Him great glory….It is through Faith that all shall be renewed, because this is a country where I am on the soil where Satan has tried so desperately to disrupt my children and take away from them.   Being on Satan’s turf, the only way for me to conquer him is through Faith, through your faith, your trust, and your hope; and this will all be done according to God’s time and good pleasure….”    (Private OLOE, June 9, 2004)

“God calls you to move forward and to be not afraid.  He calls you to show the world through your actions, through your speech in the wisdom of your words and how you say things, and through how you act, so that all will come together and will comfort all different peoples of all different ages at the right time.  It does not matter whether someone believes my words or not, but ‘faith’ is what will save this country; and I am here!”

(Our Lady of Emmitsburg, August 30, 2009)

Jesus to the disciples:

 “O’ faithless and perverse generation,

how long will I be with you?  How long will I endure you?

Bring him (boy with a demon) here to Me….

The disciples:

“Why could we not drive it out?”

“Because of your little faith.  Amen, I say to you:

If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain,

‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.

Nothing will be impossible for you.”

(Mt 17: 16-20)

“Your faith has saved you!”

(Lk 7:50)

“When the Son of Man comes,

will He find faith on earth?”

(Lk 18:8)
