“…I will put enmity between you and the woman,

and between your offspring  and hers:

she shall crush thy head,

and thou shall lie in wait for her heel….”

(Gen 3:15)

The Holiness of Mary

…And the angel coming in, said unto her:

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee:

Blessed art thou among women….”

(Lk 1:28)

St. Augustine of Hippo wrote, “Nothing whatever pertaining to godliness and real holiness can be accomplished without grace.”  (St. Augustine, 354-430)  Only one of God’s creatures has or will ever fit the description of “full of grace,” that being the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

In teaching about the prayer of the Hail Mary and the holiness of Mary,  Venerable Fr. John Hardon, S.J. asks, “How is Mary ‘full of grace’?  She is full of grace first of all because she was conceived without original sin….Moreover, throughout life she received such an abundance of grace as no one except Christ ever had or will obtain….She remained free from even the least venial sin all through life….She received grace that kept all her desires totally under control….always totally submissive to reason under the influence of this fullness of grace….

“…The Lord was with Mary, and remained with Mary, by His astounding Providence….He surrounded her with His care and arranged everything in her life to fulfill His providential purpose in her life….Mary lived in mystery which means that she lived God’s Will without ever fully understanding why….She walked in darkness, the darkness of faith!...

“…This one title, ‘Holy Mary’, has been given to her by the Church because she was the holiest of human beings….She practiced all the virtues to a sublime degree….Her holiness was not only because she was the Mother of Christ, but because she was in the friendship of God, and this kind of holiness we all have access to….She is holy because she now possesses in Heaven a treasury of glory comparable to the fullness of grace she had on earth….This holiness of Our Lady is not only to be praised.  It is also to be invoked…She is so close to God.  The closer a person is to God, the more holy he/she is….Mary’s holiness is not only to be admired and invoked. It is also to be imitated….

“…We are, unlike Mary, sinners by inheritance….We must pray for the grace of a happy death….We are asking her to ask her Son to be merciful….Mary always obtains whatever she wants, provided we have the faith to trust her and the humility to admit our need….”  (The Hail Mary, Hardon, Fr. John, S.J. 2000)

Hidden in that unique mystery of creation, in that awesome relationship between Creator and creature, in the holy relationship between Father and child of God, lies this Divine Will from which Mary came forth.  In time, it existed before her relationship with her Spouse the Holy Spirit and her beloved Son Jesus.  It seems most fitting that, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 2005, this exploration of the holiness of Mary began with the Words of God the Father:

“From the inception of time the Triune God, Father, Son & Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, gathered together.  In this meeting Creation unfolded; and the Eyes of this Triune Godhead, the Father, released a plan of Goodness and Joy, filled with all the good works that were to unfold in this Creation.

However, man went against My Word.  Man needed to repent and atone for sin.  From the inception of this most beautiful Plan of the Holy Trinity, it was determined that My Son would later come in human flesh to redeem the world which, created by My Hands, would come back to Me.

There at the same time was created the most beautiful, sinless Immaculate Soul, whose Heart would be pierced with a sword.  This sword would not only pierce her Heart, but also the hearts of those who would follow her.  She was always the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart who had dedicated her life to the Truth.  No woman has ever been created, nor shall ever be created, as pure and holy as this most Immaculate Virgin….

“…Seek refuge in the most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is united to the Most Sorrowful and Loving Heart of my Son.  You cannot have One without the Other, for the Flesh in the Womb was the Flesh of humanity.  His Blood was her blood.  In His Glory is her glory, in which you are invited to share because she cannot fully come into Heaven without drawing her children with her.  She is imploring My help in all of this for those who desire to be consecrated to Me; and I will now intervene and want all to seek refuge in her….”  (GTF, Dec. 8, 2005)

In two consecutive monthly messages in 2006, Our Heavenly Father addresses her purity and  holiness, her humility and graciousness, and her ‘fiat’ as He encourages humanity that it would behoove them to give Her the respect and thanksgiving She so deserves as She works for the salvation of all her children:

I look down upon you in graciousness because of this great Queen, a most pure and holy servant of the Throne of God, Immaculate in all ways, who looks only to cleanse you, to purify you, and to bring you to the Throne.  Her cloak of humility is one that speaks volumes and volumes of Truth and enlightenment….It would behoove you to look with graciousness, humility and with all due respect to her in thanksgiving that she, through her ‘fiat ,’ has been moved to graciously receive the Word of God in her womb.  The Son of Man came forth to suffer and to purify and to die for you because of Love….You are graced and can accomplish all that was offered to her through your free will.”  (GTF, May 8, 2006)

“Look to your Mother, pure and Immaculate, wholesome, humble and most wise….She made the ultimate choice!  It was nothing other than to be in union with My Will, to live, to breathe and to die for only one purpose.  For that purpose she is given the greatest and most holy title, ‘Mother of God,’ even though she does not seek titles….Look to her.  There you will find the entrance, the security, the protection, the wisdom and the treasure.”  (GTF, June 8, 2006)

And although He goes to great lengths to emphasize her role as our mentor, protector, intercessor and Queen, Our Father uses the word “desecrate” to describe the response Our Lady often receives as she and her Son continue to suffer for the salvation of all her children:

Allow Me to speak about the most fair and purest woman, so Immaculate and preserved without stain.  She is your mentor, an advocate for the Truth.  She directs you to My Son, enlightens you to know and to love the Trinity and to follow without knowing the way.  How beautiful this fair Queen—so fair and beautiful that the angels plead that she would commission them on her behalf to your aid.  They desire to hold your petitions and embrace them, to lay them at the Foot of the Throne.

How pure and loving a woman—so astute, wise and kind; so united through suffering, holy and humble, meek and patient!  How blessed you are that the Most Holy Trinity has given to you the gift of this fairest Queen in this time of your need, to strengthen and to guide you, to point the way, to outline a safe path, to preserve you from harm, and to protect you from evil.…

“…For you who have eyes to see and ears to hear, could you be more blessed than to receive and to listen?  All she has unveiled to you is unfolding!  Are you dismayed, or perhaps, many even frightened?  Are you astounded, or do you not care?  Do you continue to desecrate, or do you change and have hope fulfilled with the faith of Love?

Do you not know that the angels in Heaven desire to have the power you have to suffer like unto My Son and shared by this most beloved, fair and humble servant and Queen?  To love, in its purest form, is to suffer—not  being distracted by fear, not being cowardly in times of challenge, but  being strong, faith-filled, hopeful people of God.

Look to your most wonderful intercessor, the spouse of the Holy Spirit, who bore the Most Precious One of God!

The gift of life is given to you for all eternity by means of the woman whose “fiat,” sorrow, and suffering are greater than what the mind can comprehend.  United to God and her Son, she is inseparable in suffering from Him Who redeemed the world.  She, who in silence gave to the world, is your hope; and He is your salvation!”  (GTF, October 8, 2008)

”…By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance,

O God of our salvation;

You are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas….”

(Ps 65:5)

The Holiness of His Mother

“As it was through Mary that God came into the world the first time

in a state of self-abasement and privation,

may we not say that it will be again through Mary

that he will come the second time?”

(Secret of Mary, #58, St. Louis de Montfort)

Our Lord Himself in His Lessons to the world said but a few words about His Mother, the Queen of His Kingdom; however, in those words He made very clear her position in heaven, her holiness, her power and her value to all those who follow her example:

“My dear people, this day I, your Lord, wish to talk to you about My Most Blessed Mother. She is the Queen of Heaven. The angels prostrate themselves at her most holy feet, pleading with her to command them! She is the purity of My Heart.  Devotion to My Mother is having devotion to Me….

“…It is through My Mother that you are brought to Me. She purifies you and offers you to Me.  When you pray, renounce your own spirit and invite the purity of My Mother to lead you to Me!…Her prayer is so pure that We always grant her requests.

“Do not take lightly the holiness of My Mother, My Queen of My Kingdom. If you wish to dwell in My Kingdom, honor her and seek her purity, goodness, humility and meekness. I will not deny you if you do not deny My Mother.…” (Volume I, Lesson #67, July 10, 1989, BLESSED MOTHER)

For in this way,

entry into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

will be richly provided for you.”

(2Pet 1:11)

“…My Mother was ‘Immaculate’ because My Father created her soul as such, but it was her loyalty to the law and practice in obedience which deemed her ‘holy.’  Seek her as your example to follow in holiness.  Be strong, and the treasures you seek shall abundantly be betrothed to you….”  (JOM, Vol II, #52, Mar. 24, 1990)

“…Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside,

wanting to speak to you…..”

“Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”….

…“Here are my mother and my brothers!

For whoever does the Will of my Father in heaven

is my brother and sister and mother.”

(Mt 12:50)

The Humility of Our Lady

Mother Teresa of Calcutta is a modern day saint and extraordinary example of Christian humility and service for us all.  She wrote of Our Lady:

“The greatness of Our Lady was in her humility.

No wonder Jesus wanted to live so close to her.

We learn from Him and from her one lesson:

To be meek and humble of heart.”

(St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, 1910-1997)

It is not surprising that one so holy as Our Lady should speak so little about her own holiness, but rather much more about that which she, our Mother, desires to share with her human family:

          Our Lady of Emmitsburg:

“…I am a mother, full of grace.  I have extended my hand to you.  I have presented my Most Adorable and Merciful Son to you.  You all possess the same Spirit of Grace that God has gifted you.  Why then do you tear one another apart?  Why is there not harmony and unity?  My Son’s Peace is that of holiness and justice.  You do not realize the tears, the penance and the sacrifices made at a  price for your existence….My Merciful Son has allowed me to distribute graces to you.  I have a duty as a Mother to warn, to challenge, to protect and to draw all people to God.  Please, receive these graces while I am still allowed….”    (Public OLOE, July 13, 2008)

“My soul does magnify the Lord;

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

For He has regarded the humility of His handmaid;

for behold, from now on will all generations call me blessed.

The Mighty one has done great things for me, and holy is His Name….”

(Lk 1:46-49)

“The Magi came in awe, their eyes drawn to the Face of God which shone upon them with Peace and Love.  The purity and innocence dwelled within us.  The holiness was ours because of Jesus….”  (Public OLOE, Jan 7, 2007, Epiphany)

“…On entering the house they saw the child with Mary, His mother.

They prostrated themselves and did Him homage….”

(Mt 2:11)

The Holiness of Her Family

“All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord;

and all the families of the nations shall worship before Him.”

(Psalm 22:27)

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we read of the Christian family:

The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit.  In the procreation and education of children it reflects the Father’s work of creation.  It is called to partake of the prayer and sacrifice of Christ.  Daily prayer and the reading of the Word of God strengthen it in charity.  The Christian family has an evangelizing and missionary task. (CCC 2205).

The Family that has been given to us as the model of holiness in family life, to which we are all invited to aspire, is the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph.  Our Lady of Emmitsburg likens many of the difficulties of her own family life to the challenges that face so many of our families in today’s modern world:

“I can tell you that with the events happening in the world and with all the turmoil within your own very lives, there is coming a refreshing new tomorrow when you can take your pain and sufferings and turn them into joy by reflecting on the Holy Family.  Reflect on the Holy Family and ponder the way We lived as We walked the earth.  Then thank the undivided Holy Trinity for the ultimate act of Love we lived for you.

“As you praise the Holy Family, then you yourselves in your own families will realize that you are not only invited to be holy, but you can be holy.  When you focus on the Holy Family, then there is no way or time left to focus on those who do not love you or who are not charitable to you, nor on those who are bitter or angry towards you.  But in turn, because of the great glory for my Son in your prayers of thanksgiving to Him, glory then returns back to you threefold.  Focusing on the Holy Family protects you with the cloak of my mantle.  It inspires you to live fully within my Son’s means and through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  It invites you to the humility, righteousness and justice exemplified with great zeal and love by my beloved Joseph.  And it blesses you with the omnipotence of the Child Jesus Whose power and glory reign on this earth and throughout the entire universe….”   (Public OLOE, Aug. 22, 2003)

“So then, whenever we have an opportunity,

let us work for the good of all,

and especially for those of the family of faith.”

(Gal 6:10)

Although perfection in any virtue is a lifetime challenge, perfection in family life, involving so many variables, seems like even a more formidable task.  However, Our Lady of Emmitsburg reminds us of the two ingredients that appear to be so often either taken for granted or forgotten altogether in this quest, namely prayer and God’s grace:

“…Remember, my loved ones, a holy family does not mean that it is a perfect family.  You have to grow in grace.  They more you accept the grace, the more you become holy….It is not easy to do this because of the ways so many other people walk.  So few people truly desire to pray, to know the Truth, and to really know my Son.  But a holy family can grow in holiness through acceptance of the grace and acceptance of each of their own weaknesses….The greatest glory you give my Son is when you join together and offer Him your prayer; when you continue to reflect on yourselves in a positive way; and when you recognize the graces that God has given you, and then ask Him to gently enlighten you in the areas in which you need to grow.

“It was the same with my St. Joseph and me.  In our Holy Family we had to become, day in and day out, accustomed to the people who met and challenged us, as well as to all those things Jesus did.  Oftentimes we were perplexed.  We did not understand….But we offered everything up to God the Father….

“…God desires all people and all families to be holy.  Holiness grows through prayer, acceptance of grace, reflection, willingness to change, and the innocence of simply doing your best.  Along the path to holiness then, you will meet humility and charity, and the Love that conquers all….”  (Private OLOE, Dec. 27, 2003, Feast of the Most Holy Family)

“Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth,

and He was obedient to them.

His mother treasured all these things in her heart.”

(Lk 2:51)

As we see every day, on almost every source of media, a world filled with suffering, injustice and corruption, it is very easy to lose hope that there are any realistic human solutions to bring about change in our world.  Our Lady, however, encourages her children not only to hope, but to expect good outcomes:

“…So many of my children are suffering.  So many have risked so much in their lives.  They have moved from their families.  They give to other people.  They even risk their own lives for other people.  Both you and they must be children of hope and be enthusiastic for the reception of my Son’s Love.  You must be willing to give.  You must expect not only many things, but expect also good outcomes for tomorrow.  You should expect good health in your families.  You should expect and hope for Peace.  You should expect and hope for a new beginning one in which humility and charity join together to form a pinnacle of holiness.  For all children are called to be holy….”  (Public OLOE, Dec. 12, 2003)

“For those whom He foreknew,

He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,

in order that He might be the firstborn within a large family.”

(Rom 8:29)

“The greatest gift to receive from my Son is the gift of the Holy Spirit,...to know, to love, to breathe and to live life in God!  You do not realize the great gift of life….If all the mothers and fathers of the world understood the Truth, the reality of this gift of the Holy Spirit, all would be elated and share it with the conviction of ‘How awesome God is!’ in His Being, in His Spirit, in His Holiness, and in your role as mother and as father.  There can be no life with one and not the other.  The family, how precious, how glorious!”  (Public OLOE, May 11, 2008, Pentecost and Mother’s Day)

“…I give you my blessing, and the protection of a safe journey is on your holy happy family; and I pray that you will always strive together to grow in faith and holiness, the greatest virtues and the keys to entering the Kingdom of Heaven….”  (Private OLOE, July 17, 2004)

His Mother said to the servants,

“Do whatever He tells you.”

(John 2:5)

The Center of Her Immaculate Heart

“And Mary kept all these things,

reflecting on them in her heart.”

(Lk 2:19)

St. Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870) was a Spanish born Cuban bishop who fostered a great devotion to both the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to the Blessed Sacrament.  He wrote,

“A son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a man who is consumed with love and who sets on fire everything in his path. He is a man who unceasingly expends himself to light the fire of Divine Love in the world.  Nothing stops him; he places his joy in privations; he undertakes all works for the glory of God; he embraces willingly every sacrifice; he is happy in the midst of calumnies; he exults in torments.  He can think of but one thing—working, suffering, and seeking at all times the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls, to imitate Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

If Our Lady of Emmitsburg herself has designated this area here in Maryland as the Center of her Immaculate Heart, is it surprising that she would also expect it to be a home for the “sons (and daughters) of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,” and as such, a portal to the holiness she desires for all her children?

“…I am here to bring you closer to Jesus, and He will bring you to the Father.  Do not become disheartened when people scorn you.  This is part of the spiritual path to holiness and many times unavoidable.  The more you become like Jesus, the more the world will scorn you, humiliate you and persecute you.  Do not fear; for I am your Mother of Mercy, and I will protect you.  All who seek refuge in my Immaculate Heart will be safe and filled with a deep inner joy.  Here at this valley of my beloved St. Joseph is the Center to which My Immaculate Heart invites all children to seek refuge….”  (Public OLOE, July 4, 1996)

“…You are about to enter an era of cleansing which will lead to peace, true Peace in My Son.  I am not speaking of peace in the world as you know it to be.  I am speaking of God’s Peace.  In order to receive His Peace, you must be enlightened with His Truth, accept it, embrace it and live it.  All people will have the opportunity to choose Life, the Truth and Peace.  Sinners will have the opportunity to come back to grace and holiness.  This is the place, the Center of My Immaculate Heart, where My Son’s Divine Mercy will be unveiled.  In the Name of the Child Jesus, I place the seal of protection against evil upon your souls, sanctified by grace for My Son’s glorious reign….”  (Public OLOE, Oct. 21, 1999)

“Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet.

There were loud voices in heaven saying,

‘the kingdom of the world now belongs to our Lord and to his anointed,

and He will reign forever and ever.”

(Rev 11:15)

“Little ones, do you not realize that you are living in an oasis of peace and comfort?  There are around you so much division and controversy.  But right here where I am, where I come to you, is a place of tremendous holiness, a place of Peace, a place of Love….Humanity will not be able to pass over this site as they so casually do at this point in time.  Yes, God the Father will come in His most glorious and compassionate way.  Love itself will show humanity what they had, what they could have achieved, and what they could still receive….”  (Private OLOE, Jan 26, 2004)

“…Now, during these times of confusion and division, I have asked God the Father to intervene.  Now God the Father in a very special way is with you.  It is a new beginning.  This Triumph of my Immaculate Heart is one in which God the Father dwells within each creature so that each may give Him praise, glory and honor….You are safe, and this is a special place, the Center of my Immaculate Heart.  Holiness dwells here among the people.  My beloved ‘saints,’ so many, serve each other.  It is a holy place.

“Know that even though there may be challenges and suffering, the suffering that you endure is a purgation so that God can dwell totally within you and that you may grow to be one with Him in His Holiness.  All those who desire God must be holy as He is Holy.  Those who do not desire God will know the breadth and depth of hell.  All are invited, and those of you who have suffered are now the lights to help those who suffer….”  (Public OLOE, April 3, 2005, Divine Mercy Sunday)

“…the Messiah must suffer and that,

as the first to rise from the dead,

He would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.”

(Acts 26:23)

The Holiness of My “Fiat”

“…Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

May it be done to me according to your word….”

(Lk 138)

“…Even being born with an Immaculate Heart, I still had a free will to say ‘yes.’  I still experienced every emotion, and I could have indeed, if I so desired, said ‘no.’  But my fiat’ was enveloped with the Love of God because I desired holiness; and your ‘fiat’ can also be as mine….”  (Private OLOE, Sept. 7, 2010)

“…The more fully you live your lives in my Son and strive to be all that you have been created to be, then all the more shall holiness be your fruit and great glory shall abound in you.  Ponder my purity and what I have given to you by bearing the Word in my womb.  My ‘fiat’ and my continuous joy in my God have protected me, just as your ‘fiat’ and continuous praise to my Son will protect you….”  (Public OLOE, Aug. 22, 2003)

“From His Heart will flow rivers of living waters.”

(Jn 7:38)

“…The most precious gift you have is my Son in the Most Blessed and Holy Eucharist, and I His Mother am right by His side.  From my womb I gave birth to Him.  In my womb I still hold the treasures of your holiness and glory in His Holy Name; and I provide a place for all children to seek refuge, to be safe, to be free, and to be most wise….”  (Public OLOE, Jan. 1, 2004)

“Then he said to the disciple,

‘Here is your mother.’

And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.”

(Jn 19:27)
