Introduction: TRUTH
“Nothing gives me greater joy
than to hear that my children are
walking in the truth.”
(3Jn 1:4)
Any discussion about honesty
and integrity would by necessity demand a common understanding of
the principles of “truth.” In the Article on the 8th
Commandment (of
God’s Ten Commandments)
in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we read: “The Eighth
Commandment forbids misrepresenting the truth in our relations with others.
This moral prescription flows from the vocation of the holy people to bear
witness to their God who is the Truth and wills the truth. Offenses against
truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness.
They are fundamental infidelities to God and, in this sense, they undermine the
foundations of our covenant with God.” (CCC 2464)
In this 2nd Part
of the Series on Honesty and Integrity, we will explore how both God,
in His Triune Presence with humanity, and Our Lady of Emmitsburg, as
both Mother and spiritual director, view those fundamental infidelities of sin,
namely dishonesty and deceitfulness.
Sin
“If we say, ‘We are without
sin,’ we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in
us….
If we say, ‘We have not sinned,’
we make Him a liar,
and His word is not in us.”
(1Jn 1:8,10)
The Catechism of the Catholic Church
teaches us that “Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human nature
wounded by their own first sin and hence deprived of original holiness and
justice; this deprivation being called ‘original sin.’ As a
result of this sin, human nature is weakened in its powers; subject to
ignorance, suffering, and the domination of death; and inclined to sin.” (CCC 417-418)
This natural inclination to sin, concupiscence,
according to Our Lord in His Lessons, demands honest
reconciliation, followed by absolution, to return the soul to its purity
through God’s Mercy. Too often, as in the case of Judas Iscariot, man’s pride
and lack of trust can be his own greatest obstacle to the Mercy of God, and his
own inability to forgive “self” then blocks his own prosperity:
“Sin is an act
committed, either by thought or action, which paralyzes the soul of spiritual
drink. It becomes a passion in thought or action, and drains the soul of many
graces. You commit sin by allowing your mind or your body to control you
through a disgraceful passion of evil….When you sin, allow My
Spirit to truthfully guide you to honest reconciliation; and your soul will be
nourished. Once absolution of your sin is completed, you become
virginal in purity….” (JOM, Vol II, #12, Oct. 18, 1989, Sin)
“…Forgive
yourself so I can forgive you….Sin will continuously stain the soul
until you allow forgiveness from Me and yourself. I cannot forgive you, if you
hold bound your sin by not forgiving yourself. The conflict and separation of
inner being will exist until you allow My goodness to prevail. Reconciliation
is needed to see Me in your heart. A true confession will result from My
Spirit’s guidance and your sincerity, honesty and humility…If you will humble
yourself to accept the Truth and allow Me to unite My goodness in you, the joy
would be overwhelming. ….If you sin, admit your guilt, ask for forgiveness,
and return back to Me. Immerse yourselves in My Mercy. I will redeem you….If
you are guilty, return to the Lord; and I will not turn away….Do not return
evil with evil….You are not going to prosper if you conceal your sins,
but you will receive my Mercy if you repent and confess.
If I shed Mercy on you who sin, should you not shed Mercy on your brethren?” (JOM, Vol IV,
#92, Sept. 15, 1992, Mercy)
“…For behold, my witness is in
Heaven;
and He that knows my conscience
is on high….:
(Job 16:20)
It would appear that in our current
world, the examination of conscience has become a thing of the
past for most people, or the conscience itself has become so numb that it can
no longer recognize or discern good and/or evil. That does not change the fact
that God exists, grave sin exists, and God’s Mercy still remains more effective
than man’s greatest sin is destructive. Our Lord goes on to address the
lack of awareness of sin in our world and its devastating effects:
“…I came to save
the sinner, but My people think they have not sinned and do not need God. They
have made idols of themselves. Anything which is good within them they display
and brag outwardly in self-love. They do not see that all good things come
from Me and Me alone, not through their own merit. They consider themselves
perfect and in need of no change. Any vice of their flesh is excused. Yet
they are impatient with anyone who does not show them respect or honor. They
are proud and lack faith. They do not love God, and they do not love their countrymen.
They thrive on the misfortunes of their enemies. They are full of pride and
self-love. Their lack of faith is due to their negligence in seeking the
knowledge of God in truth and in humility. A lack of faith is a lack of
conviction about the truth of My sweetness. They do not desire an intimate or
personal relationship with Me. They do not desire a deep living faith which
surpasses all knowledge. All their intentions stem from self-interest, comfort
and praise, about which they boast deceitfully. What state could be more
sinful? Yet they think they are not sinners and do not need salvation. This
carelessness will result in their own judgment in due season. If they will not
heed My Word and allow My Mercy to change their strong hearts to repentant
hearts, their own judgment standards will toss them into the abyss of eternal
flames which will consume their souls in everlasting agony and misery….” (JOM, Vol V, #8,
Mar. 18, 1995, The Idolatry of Self)
“…If that nation against which I
have spoken shall repent of their evil,
I also will repent of the
evil that I have thought to do to them….”
(Jer 18:8)
PRAYER
“For a brief
moment it seemed as if the Lord our God had listened to our prayers; he
would leave a remnant of our race surviving,
leave
us a foot-hold on this holy ground;
some
gleam of hope our God would afford us,
some
breath of life in our bondage….”
(Ezra 9:8)
With prayer, Our Lady
of Emmitsburg assures each of us that we can be enlightened by the Father to
discern those areas where we sin, where we may be blinded
by deception, where we need to be made whole, where God’s purging may be so
very necessary, and where our human pride raises its ugly head to block our
path to holiness. Far too often, fear and humiliation and embarrassment hinder
an honest assessment of our own sinfulness and of our true relationship with
God, thus making repentance very difficult and risking what Our
Lady describes in a horrific analogy, using terms such as “worms
devouring” and “excrement”:
“…Each one of
you know in your heart the ways of the Truth, where you have sinned, and where
you need to be forgiven by God. With this knowledge comes the blessing from
Heaven for your honesty in being genuine as a human being….As you
pray, take a moment and ponder, and ask God the Father to enlighten you with discernment
so that you have the wisdom to know in which direction you are to proceed…. (Private OLOE,
Mar. 28, 2005)
“…Pray before
God in the Blessed Sacrament for the truth of your deceitful ways so
that you will be able to repent in humility and be made whole. My Son
loves you, and I wish to help you and save you from walking towards a life of
human destruction….In order to do this, you must humbly submit to changing your
deceitful ways of power, reputation, acceptance of man, and success for
your own glory to that which belongs to God….” (Public OLOE,
May 5, 1994)
“…Do not focus
on fear, but instead focus on changing your old ways to new ones of
honesty, love. compassion and works of mercy….There are so many deceptions and
demoralizing issues which have infected the world. Many people don’t know what
is God’s Truth….If iniquity is to be purged in sinners, God allows it
so all have the opportunity to share in His glory. He can only love, and any purification
is an act of His merciful Love. You are mistaken to think God
destroys life. Humanity is responsible for the destruction of life through rejection
of God’s Truth….” (Public OLOE, Oct. 28, 1999)
“…There is so
much power and pride in the world today; and yet, God seeks holiness
for you. He desires you to be all of Him….Even with the depth of your sin and
even until your last breath, you can ask for forgiveness because God is
merciful. But if you do not repent and reform your lives and return to God,
your sin is like worms devouring you, like excrement so
undesirable and horrific….
“…God created
you pure and holy, and He desires you to be all-loving and kind and to receive
all the beautiful gifts and graces that He would love to give you….Honesty
is what is necessary, and both silence and love….The walk you
walk is one that you walk alone….There are so many gifts awaiting you, but
sin must be removed….” (Public OLOE, Mar. 5, 2006)
“If I had not come and spoken to
them, they would have no sin;
but as it is, they have no excuse
for their sin….
If I had not done works among
them that no one else ever did,
they would not have sin;
but as it is, they have seen and
hated both Me and My Father….”
(Jn 16: 22,24)
DISHONESTY
“…Helcias and his wife praised
God, for their daughter Susanna,
with Joakim her husband, and all
her kindred,
because there was no dishonesty
found in her….”
(Dan 13:63)
Our Lord in His Lessons
has had much to say about honesty, but it seems that He has
had even more to say about dishonesty. He cites very common
examples of areas so many of us share in our dishonesty with God, each other
and ourselves: areas of exaggeration, control, pride and ego, inconsistency,
and attachment to wealth:
EXAGGERATION
“…The Word of God is living and
effective,
sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating even between soul and
spirit….
and able to discern reflections
and thoughts of the heart….
Everything is naked and exposed
to the eyes of Him
to whom we must render an
account.”
(Heb 4:12-13)
“…There is no
need to exaggerate your stories in order to persuade someone or
to make the outcome to be one in your favor. This only prevents growth and
peace. Your dishonesty will only turn on you and pierce your heart with
a two-edged sword….Your deceit will only cause you to fall….Stop
deceiving yourselves by attempting to convince others with words of
dishonesty. Stop seeking the acceptance of man, but seek
acceptance from God. Humble yourselves before the sight of Him Who sent Me. Seek
first His Kingdom in Truth….” (JOM, Vol II, #48, Feb. 25, 1990, Honesty)
CONTROL
”…Everyone was burned by this blast of heat,
and
they cursed the name of God,
who
had control over all these plagues.
They
did not repent of their sins and turn to God and give him glory.”
(Rev 16:9)
“…How I watch My
people suffer needlessly because of their desire to control their
future. I, the Son of God, Who became the Son of Man, continue to suffer the
wounds man inflicted upon Me. These are not the physical wounds but the
wounds bound to my Heart, wounds of man’s weakness through selfishness,
pride, hatred and poisonous dishonesty.
These wounds strap man into solitary confinement, preventing all hopes of
freedom for the soul….
…I continue to
ask and pray for My people that they will surrender unto Me by simply willing
to accept My ways…They are addicted to their ways of life, which must be
centered around themselves, instead of God….I am asking for selflessness and
complete openness to God at all times, not only when it serves to address your
needs and grant you consolation and joy….Be selfless! Pray for
selflessness, and the grace shall be granted you; but know that
selflessness is a grace granted on My Father’s terms, not yours!” (JOM, Vol III,
#20, Dec. 26, 1990, Acceptance)
PRIDE
“When pride comes,
disgrace comes;
but with the humble is
wisdom.”
(Prov 11: 2)
“…Are you so
important that you need guards surrounding your pride and ego,
preventing any risk of meeting humility? Do not jeopardize your destiny by
escaping the Truth…..Pay attention to Me and My words of humility.
Do not allow your time to pass, for that is risking your security by not coming
to Me in humility. I am speaking about self-conceit, lack of sincerity, lack
of truth, dishonesty, lack of dignity, mercilessness, uncompassionate
self-injury and self destruction through synthetic chemicals…..Come to Me
now, for later it will be far too difficult to focus on Me because of your
illness of self-conceit and lack of humility!...Can you not come in
emptiness and leave without any answers because of your love for Me, wanting
only to be with Me, singing praises of love?...Whether I fill you with
spiritual emptiness or fervor, your desire for Me is what I
desire for all My people. Make your wish for Me this night, and it shall be
granted….” (JOM,
Vol IV, #8, Nov. 11, 1991, Love in Humility)
INCONSISTENCY
“… ‘Lord, do you want us
to call down fire from heaven to
consume them?’
Jesus turned and rebuked them….”
(Lk 9:55)
“…I want My
people to be faithful to My Love through their consistency of action.
If they pray and are faith-filled, loving disciples, they will be consistent in
their actions, service and love….Not of your merit do you
succeed in strength of virtue, but through surrender. My Love is
true, but the tests I give to you to see your progress do not always
prove true to your claimed love of faithfulness to Me!...This type of
claimed love is not LOVE, it is not unconditional….How poor is the
deceitfulness of your love for Me….So many of My people are stricken with pain
and sorrow from this conditional love of deception and dishonesty.”
(JOM,
Vol IV, #40, July 26, 1992, Fidelity)
“…I am here to
warn my people, as a watchman warns the troops before battle!...You who are bad
and know Me, but do not turn to good, it would be better for you had you never
known of My goodness. You who have good in you, but have begun to live deceitfully
and dishonestly, it would be better had you not known Me. For
those, who are good and do deceitful acts, will be judged as if they were
not righteous. The good deeds accredited to them will not be
acknowledged! But those, who are righteous and holy in Me, shall receive their
reward without punishment! For what is due to man for his unjust ways shall be
fulfilled as promised by My Father….” (JOM, Vol II, #34, Jan. 4, 1990, The
Love of Jesus)
WEALTH
“…No one can serve two masters….
You cannot serve God and mammon….”
(Mt 6:24)
“…If My people
are dishonest with their wealth, how are they going to be able to handle
the wealth I have promised them? People live in this world placing so much
value on money and materialism that they allow it to control them. They
become dishonest and not trustworthy….I am the Source of Life, and I provide
the source of true wealth. But my people will not even acknowledge their
dishonesty. They will not ask for forgiveness, allow Me to fill them with My
honesty, and make them trustworthy to receive My wealth….They are not even
honest with themselves. The money they have, they say is not enough. The
richest of the rich in this mortal world are deceived through their dishonesty
to believe they do not have enough.
“My people, look
at your inner being and see your dishonesty….Those of you who look at
yourselves and see no stain because of your complacency, beware! It is you who
live in darkness….If only My people would allow Me to give them My wealth,
how rich they would truly be!” (JOM,
Vol II, #9, Oct. 9, 1989, Dishonesty)
The
Lord sends poverty and wealth;
He
humbles and He exalts.”
(1Sam 2:7)
Then and Now
“Then [at Mount Sinai] His voice shook the earth,
but
now He has given a promise:
Yet
once more I will shake and make tremble
not
only the earth, but also the heavens.”
(Heb 12:26)
We do not have to look very far—in our families
and our neighborhoods, in our nation and our world, in our Church and in our
faith—to see the brokenness, the disunity, the lack of love and kindness, the
disappearance of discipline and faith. Despite this, however, Our Lord has
never given up on us—not 2000 years ago, and not now! Our Lord, His
beloved Mother, His Almighty Father, the Angels
and Saints are all coming to countless faithful
throughout the world, warning, begging, praying and enlightening us. And so
many of us are pleading for that promised Second Pentecost, that explosion of
the Holy Spirit into our world and our lives in a sanctifying moment that
changes the world forever. Our Lord in His Lessons encourages us
to learn from the past, but to look to the fruitfulness that the
future holds for those who have the discipline to live it:
“Now, My broken
people, you must allow me to ….remold you, to be the potter;
or you will only continue to break yourselves and one another until
the existence of your world ceases to be….” (JOM, Vol IV,
#40, July 26, 1992, Fidelity)
“…Does not the potter have a
right over the clay,
to make out of the same lump one
vessel for a noble purpose
and one for an ignoble one?”
(Rom 9:21)
“…Look to your
historians of the past, and learn that it is most necessary to forgive and
important to take heed of the consequences which could always follow suit once
again through lack of unity, dishonesty, and economic monetary empires seeking
control and power.” (JOM,Vol
IV, #22. June 29, 1992, Willingness)
“…If you try to
live in prayer and truth, in love and kindness, I will assist
your endeavors because of your willingness. The flesh must be
disciplined to carry out the fulfillment of the Word. This comes through
willingness and desire, but also taking heed of the Word through action….
“….See with all
of your heart that which brings fruits of the vine. The fruits
of the vine will ripen from the vine. I am the Vine. As you have seen
vineyards that bear fruit, only sweet fruit is produced from the strength of the
vine. The way of your world is one which lacks discipline of the
flesh to the call of prayer and unity, but reflects destruction
through violence….
“…Take the
disciplinary measures to follow Me by living My Word….Be disciplined to be
strong in the flesh by taking the steps to live it!” (JOM, Vol IV, #
22, June 29, 1992, Willingness)
“Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his
child,
the Lord your God disciplines you.”
(Deut 8:5)
While acknowledging both the dishonest
and grossly evil ways which prevent the true freedom of
so many in the world as well as the often irrational, external appearance of
the behavior and attitudes of even the poor and needy, Our Lady of
Emmitsburg challenges us to look for her Son, her Jesus, in each
of them and to share His Love and Mercy with those who are so “saturated with
pain and in need of Love”:
“Little
children, do not alter your standards of following the Gospel in order
to satisfy the needs of others. Never deviate from the Truth of His Word. You
cannot please men by jeopardizing your freedom and living deceitful ways
of life. The only way to freedom is by living the Truth outlined by My
Son….You cannot change His words and live dishonest lives and conceive
that Peace could even exist…..I plead with you that you hold fast to His
Word and not deviate from His stand on Truth, or you will suffer
tremendously through the hands of man….Killings of all sorts, greed, abuse,
selfishness, anger, malice, dishonesty, adultery and other sexual
disgraces, both self-induced and those on children men and women, are vices
which prevent your freedom….” (Public OLOE, Feb. 24, 1994)
“…Did not God choose those who
are poor in the world
to be rich in faith and heirs of
the Kingdom
that He promised to those who
love Him?”
(Ja 2:5)
“…There are poor
people in this world who may seem to be irrational, and at times it may
seem very difficult to reach out to them in love. Their intentions may seem
less than honest or sincere. They may not seem to have a clear mind. They may
be very demanding at times and their choice of words may be less than
desirable. If you focus on the behavior and the outer appearance of the poor,
it can be frustrating. If you focus on Jesus, who is personified in
each person, whether he be poor or wealthy, then you will be able to perform
works of Love and Mercy….” (Public OLOE, Jan. 8, 1998)
“We know that all creation is
groaning in labor pains even until now;…
we ourselves also groan within
ourselves
as we wait for adoption, the
redemption of our bodies….”
(Rom 822-23)
“…God is the
only Way to true love and retaining dignity. It is difficult to love when
you are met with indifference, anger and dishonesty; but it is the only way to
slay evil. The more selfless you become, the easier it is to love;
because you become One with your Creator and His shield of protection embraces
you. You will have mercy on the precious souls who are saturated with pain
and in need of so much love…..”(Public OLOE,
Jan. 7, 1999)
“…Many people
are dishonest and deceitful, yet Jesus loves them and
desires them to receive His Mercy. There are so many people affected with
pain that they do not know which way to walk to find God’s Love. They do
not realize that they do not need to find God, because He is there by their
sides wanting to give them His Love and desiring to shed His Mercy. Pray,
little children, for all peoples, and work together fervently to help others
know the Truth and Mercy of God….” (Public OLOE, July 1, 1999)
“For this we toil and struggle,
because we have set our hope
on the living God,
who is the Savior of all,
especially of those who believe.”
(1Tim 4:10)
Deceitfulness
“The tongue that brings healing is a tree
of life,
but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
(Prov 15:4)
Our Lord in His Lessons
takes note of our deviations from His Truth, warns us of the consequences
and leaves no room within Himself for the manipulations and half-truths
that are so common in human relationships. And finally, He notes that truth is
confirmed through our deeds, not by the mere proclamation of the
empty “yes” from our lips. A “child of God” must live the
truth, not just have knowledge of it and speak it well:
“…Take heed,
all ye who live deceitfully!” (JOM, Vol II, #34, Jan. 4. 1990, The
Love of Jesus)
“…Words are of
little value unless the action speaks the truth of the word. If
your behavior is haughty and your words are loving, is that not a contradiction
of My Truth?...Deeds speak the truth….Haughtiness and disrespectful
behavior to others and to yourselves are deeds which confirm falsehood and deceitfulness…..
.
“...How many do
you witness today of promising words but of little trust, and with deeds that
fail the Word? There are many who desire initially to be My follower, but so
few who walk the Word because of their underdeveloped respect for
themselves and others; and worst still, because of their lack of devout willingness
to allow Me to develop within them mature behavior….
“…That is the
final Truth. Are the deeds respectful or disrespectful? Are
they pure or unclean? Are they loving or deceitful? Are
they honest or dishonest? The deed reflects not only the Truth
of the Word, but reveals the depth of devotion…..How many live deceiving
themselves that they are pure and belong to Me, yet turn around by their deeds
and scandalous affairs, and live falsely?...
“…You cannot be
called a ‘child of God’ and gain the Kingdom unless your deeds
are as pure as My Word!...How wretched you are to claim purity as if it were
deserving of you when the deed is not pure!...If you wish to be my follower,
you will pray for inner growth and development and will accept My Truth by
living the Word through your actions….Do you truly wish to be My follower? If
so, is your ‘yes’ one proclaimed through your lips,
or is it lived through your deeds?...” (JOM, Vol II,
#36, Jan 10, 1990, Deeds)
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’
Show me
your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do….” (James 2:18)
Certainly, the recipe for gaining the
Kingdom includes that abandonment to God’s Will, sharing all that we have been
given, avoiding all evil, and then trusting that God will protect us and
deliver us from any harm we might encounter as we take a risk for Him:
“…There is a difference
between loving yourself and being self-centered. You need to empty
yourself, continually abandoning yourself to the Will of God….Chase
only heavenly desires….The more you strip yourself of your own will, the more
of yourself you can sincerely give to one another….Do not waste energy on those
who harbor hatred and are your enemy because of envy and jealousy….They will
only sidetrack you and use you for their gain….Be giving to those open to
receive. Be giving to those who cannot give. Be giving to those who are not
willing to receive, but have a clean heart. Avoid the evil. I will handle
their unfair and deceitful actions….Remember, I can deliver you from any
circumstance caused to harm you….” (JOM, Vol IV, #46, Aug. 1, 1992, Love
Yourself Dearly)
“…Do not conform yourself to this
age,
but be transformed by the
renewal of your mind,
that you may discern what is the Will
of God,
what is good and pleasing and perfect.”
(Rom. 12:2)
Unfortunately, the world and all of its
institutions are filled with deceitful words. And unfortunately, most people
in the world are looking toward any and all directions and avenues for
solutions to the escalating number of crises in our societies and cultures.
However, so few are looking to the Source—the permissive Source of all of those
problems and crises, and the infinite Solution to all of them. Change without
action—Divine action—seems fruitless; and thus, peace, true and lasting Peace,
seems out of reach for this secular, godless world. Our Lady, not only
here in Emmitsburg, but throughout the world for decades, has been pleading and
teaching, pointing to the answers; but still, for the most part, her words have
fallen on deaf ears, both in the world and even in the Church:
“…My little
children, I must tell you not to trust in deceitful words. If you focus
on Jesus, trust in Him, abandon yourself unto Him and practice His words of
Truth, you will not be deceived….Change is needed, not only in words,
but in actions….If change is not accomplished, then the time will come when
your sorrow will result at the hands of a wicked disposition, which will
be its blame….”
(Public
OLOE, Mar. 10, 1994)
“…People must
return to the true Word of God. There is only one Way which has been outlined
for you through My Son. Many are seeking various props or words to help them
feel good and closer to God….
“…Simply look
to Jesus. Bow only to the crucified Jesus by gazing upon the Crucifix
and the Most Blessed Sacrament, adoring Him with reverence….The subtlety
of evil has infiltrated the world through trickery, deceitfulness, anger,
malice and control. A forced peace is not lasting. A binding contract is only
temporary. Peace must come from the heart. It can only come from God….” (Public OLOE,
July 15, 1999)
“…For God is not the God of
dissension,
but the God of Peace….”
(1Cor 14:33)
As prophesied to Pope Leo XIII in 1884,
Satan has been allowed by God free reign for a century, and he has very
effectively used his time and power to contaminate humanity and
to attack and harm the Body of Christ, but Our Lord in
His Lessons assures us that Satan’s reign is coming to a close and that
God’s intervention will be soon—not soon enough for His faithful
remnant!
“…The time of Satan’s
reign is ending and, soon this world will know that the God of
Glory truly exists! All deceptions will be put aside….Urge all
to commence sincere loving and restoration of dignity and honesty now! I no
longer want your ‘words.’ I want your hearts of purity.
Begin being fair with one another and merciful. Stop your gossip and evil
plots against one another.
“I will no
longer endure your behavior any further….Soon you will all see your own
deception, I repeat: the way of life with your brothers and sisters is to
be of Love, Mercy, Respect, Dignity, Compassion and Honesty….”
(JOM,
Vol IV, #82, Aug. 17, 1992, Your Future)
“Heed my charge, then, not to
defile yourselves
by observing the abominable
customs
that have been observed before
you.
I, the Lord, am your God.”
(Lev 18:30)
End of Honesty
and Integrity, Part 2
