The Wisdom of the Father

The Wisdom of Jesus

The Spirit of Wisdom

A Gift of the Holy Spirit

(Compiled by Michael T. Sullivan, MD)

"…Today, every human being, every precious soul has an opportunity

to say 'yes' or to say 'no'.

Listen, and you will hear words of wisdom and enlightenment,

words to follow, Truth in life, yours to be had…."

(Our Lady of Emmitsburg, June 28, 2008)

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

"The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him:

a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, spirit of counsel and of strength,

a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord."

(Is 11:2)

As expressed in the Catholic Encyclopedia (New Advent), to the Holy Spirit are attributed the operations of grace and the sanctification of souls, and in particular spiritual gifts and fruits.  The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are freely given by God (Is 11:2-3), and they are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.   These are considered supernatural and permanent qualities which make us attentive to the voice of God, which render us susceptible to the workings of actual grace, which  make us love the things of God, and consequently, render us more obedient and docile to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.  As permanent qualities, they can be nurtured over a lifetime to bring about our eternal reward, or they can be neglected and starved over a lifetime and convict us to our eternal damnation.

Part 1

"…Who ever knew your counsel,

except you had given Wisdom and sent your Holy Spirit from high?

And thus were the paths of those on earth made straight,

and men learned what was your pleasure and were saved by Wisdom…."

(Wisdom 9:17-18)

Our Lady of Emmitsburg to all her children:

"Little ones, the Gift of the Holy Spirit is the most precious and important Gift from God, because it is God Himself.  Without the Holy Spirit, you would have no Wisdom, Understanding or Knowledge, no Counsel and Piety.  You would not have the Fear of God.  All the Gifts of the Holy Spirit would not be given to you.  God is among you and with you and in you, and this is a great Gift indeed!  You can have the Courage and Fortitude to move fearlessly to do what God has asked you to do.  How blessed you are to desire God to be within you and to follow Him!  He invites you to follow Him.

"Everything seemed to be lost without the Holy Spirit.  The Apostles were confused and frightened.  Then when God breathed upon them the Gift, all was made new; and today it is still once again made new!  St. Peter always wanted to know what was going on.  He wanted to know the least of the secrets, and my Son would say to him, “What does it matter?  You were called to follow Me.”

(Jn 21:20-23)

"You, children, are called to follow Him too.  It does not matter that you know every intricate secret or what the Lord is doing next.  All you need to do is to follow Him, and the Gift of the Holy Spirit will enlighten you and give you the strength and courage to do exactly that."  (Private OLOE, May 30, 2009)

"For wisdom is better than all the most precious things;

and whatsoever may be desired cannot be compared to it."

(Proverbs 8:11)

"Wisdom" is defined in the Catholic Dictionary as "the first and highest of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.  It makes the soul responsive to God in the contemplation of Divine things.  Where faith is a simple knowledge of the articles of Christian belief, wisdom goes on to a certain Divine penetration of the truths themselves.  Built into wisdom is the element of love, which inspires contemplative reflection on these Divine mysteries, rejoices in dwelling on them, and directs the mind to judge all things according to their principles."  However, Webster's New World Dictionary defines wisdom as "the power of judging rightly and following the soundest course of action, based on knowledge, experience and understanding"  This definition then restricts “wisdom” to only its acquired human characteristics rather than a supernatural gift from God.

The Book of Wisdom of Solomon is one of five Old Testaments books often referred to as the "Wisdom Books":  Ecclesiastes, Job, Proverbs, Sirach and the Wisdom of Solomon.  "Wisdom" seems to be often presented as an "understanding of the providential plan of God in creation.  This is what Job and Ecclesiastes seek but cannot find, while it is what Proverbs, Sirach and Wisdom promise will be given to those who seek." (Seely, Dr. Andrew, What Is Wisdom?, Thomas Aquinas College, 2000)  Interestingly,  in the Books of Ecclesiastes & Wisdom, "wisdom" is personified in the feminine gender, although scripture scholars understand that personification to be as King Solomon,  God from eternity, or at times,  Christ Himself, and in certain verses, as a biblical prefigurement of the New Testament's Holy Spirit, the Virgin Mary or even the bride of Christ, the Church. We will leave it to the theologians and scholars to address the biblical intentions of the authors of these Books, while we pray to be open and to wisely discern the divine inspirations held within them for each of us.

Examples of various personifications in the Wisdom books:

King Solomon:  "…You have chosen me as king over your people….You have bid me to build a temple on your holy mountain….a copy of the holy tabernacle which you had established from of old…."  (Wis 9:8-9)

The Almighty God:  "…When on his account the earth was flooded, Wisdom again saved it, piloting the just man on frailest wood…."  (Wis 10:4)

The Messiah, Jesus:  "For she is the refulgence of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of His goodness…."  (Wis 7:26-27)

The Passion of Jesus: "Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us;…He professes to have knowledge of God, and styles himself a child of the Lord….He judges us debased….Let us see whether his words be true….Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him." (Wis. 2:12, 13, 15,18-20)

The Holy Spirit:  "…For wisdom will not enter into a malicious soul, nor dwell in a body subject to sins…."  (Wis 1:4)

Holy Mother Church:  "…With the bread of life and understanding, she shall feed him, and give him the water of wholesome wisdom to drink; and she shall be made strong in him, and he shall not be moved…."  (Ecc 15:3)

The Blessed Virgin Mary:  "And that there is a great delight in her friendship, and inexhaustible riches in the works of her hands, and in the exercise of conference with her, wisdom, and glory in the communication of her words.  I went about seeking that I might take her to myself."  (Wis 8:18)

Moreover, now we will ponder what has been given to the world through Gianna Talone Sullivan by God the Father in His Words, Our Lord Jesus Christ in His Lessons, and Our Lady of Emmitsburg in her Messages to the world regarding "wisdom" and how it may apply to each of our very own spiritual journeys.

The Wisdom of God the Father

"All wisdom is from the Lord God, and hath been always with Him,

and is before all time….The word of God on high is the fountain of wisdom,

and her ways are everlasting commandments."

(Ecclesiasticus  1:1,5)

In His Lessons to the world, Jesus goes to great lengths to explain His relationship to the Father and each person's relationship to the Father through Jesus, likening that to a newborn babe being cradled.  He then explains how wisdom is intimately involved with both knowledge and love, and any human fear of the Father can be overcome by the desire to be dependent on and to trust in the Wisdom of the Father:

"My people restrict themselves by limiting, with their hearts and minds, what is attainable!  What man does not understand with his mind, he does not seek.   If man does not understand God, he will not seek Him.  That is why I always spoke in parables.  Man could not understand the Truth of My words and would have only accepted what he wanted to hear, had I not spoken in parables.  Even now, in these Lessons, few will grasp the total Truth and seek My Father's Kingdom….

"…I wish for My people to know My Father, Who lives within their hearts and their thoughts.  He will grant you strength to persevere and wisdom in His eyes.  He will comfort you, not harm you!  He will cradle you like a newborn babe.  He will not enslave you, but give you everlasting freedom, for which your souls desire and plead…."  (JOM, Vol II, Lesson #17, Nov. 1, 1989, The Living God)

"In order to love Me, it is necessary to love life, to love all peoples, and to walk the path of My Word, Truth and Light.  The path I walked was designed by My Father. To know Him is to know His path and to cherish it.  I am the Path to My Father.  I am the Truth and the Light for the world.  Those who receive Me receive Him Who sent Me….

"…Wisdom comes through loving and simplicity.  Wisdom penetrates the heart in the silence of prayer.  Those who fear God in all humility have received the first grace of wisdom, for God is all-powerful and all-knowing….Wisdom gains you knowledge.  To know Him is to be wise.  To be wise is to love.  To love is to be One with Me.   To be One with Me is to be One with My Father, for We are One.  My Father has so much to give.  His Love is endless.  He is tender and kind and comforts all in their pain.  Yet, few seek Him and few desire to have a truly personal relationship with Him because they keep their distance from Me….Those who seek God's Mercy are humble, and they enter the gateway to wisdom and holiness….

"…There are many who are afraid to come to Me even after I have told them of My Mercy and My Father's Love.  My Father has so much to give to his little children who desire to be dependent on Him and trust Him….Their image of the Father will change when they gain wisdom and come to know Him…."  (JOM, Vol V, #19, Sept. 12, 1995, The Path to My Father)

Certainly, throughout all Christian teaching is that fundamental theme of total surrender and total abandonment to the Divine Will, to Divine Providence.  In its fullness, this aspect of our spirituality spans the entire human experience with all the apparent good and bad that may be playing any role in our lives.  This level of trust does not just happen, but must be nurtured over our lifetime, and ultimately it must be desired to be attained:

"…Nothing happens to you in life unless My Father wills it so.  Trust in Divine Providence and surrender to His consoling truths.  Trust in the Wisdom of God.  His judgment does not lack in what is advantageous to you…. Even misfortunes have a useful purpose….

"I will teach you to conform to the Will of My Father in adversity as well as in prosperity, in times of humiliation and disgrace as well as in times of honor and respect.  I will lead you and be your Teacher.  Though all may turn from you, I will never leave you.  I will be there for you.  You will have a place to rest your weary head. I am all merciful and loving.  I am your Jesus of Mercy…."  (JOM, Vol V, #29, Nov. 9, 1995, Let Me Orchestrate Your Time)

As the perfection of God's creation, Our Lady of Emmitsburg also so very well speaks of both of the Wisdom of the Father and His Divine Providence:

"Little children, trust yourself entirely to God and His Divine Providence.  Allow Him to do whatever is necessary in your life without being anxious….Excite in yourselves that all will turn out for your happiness and advantage in love….Make an act of charity by extending your arms to God and attaching yourselves to His Divine Providence.  God has Infinite Wisdom, and all His ways are good….Nothing happens without His permission…."  (Public OLOE, June 1, 1995)

"…Healing comes from God, and healing is yours to be had: in your hearts, in your minds, and in your souls.  It is for you to claim.  But God has the ultimate Wisdom and Knowledge and Freedom, so each of us must always look to relinquishing our will to that of God Himself, His Will for each of us…."  (Private OLOE, Feb. 7, 2004)

Most of us have probably been in situations or even among friends and heard the question asked, "How could  an all-loving God allow this or that to happen or such suffering and injustice to occur?"  Our Lady of Emmitsburg addresses some of these issues--the evil in the world, the anger of both man and Satan, and the perfection of God's Plan in His Infinite Wisdom:

"…The world is in turmoil….There is much evil and very much deception.  There are so many angry people.  There are also so many people who desire to be loved; and because they are not recognized or noticed, they take matters into their own hands, feeling unloved.  They exaggerate their actions so that they can draw attention to themselves in hopes that they will feel the power of love.  Many people believe that the more they are noticed and the more fans they have, that this equates with love….Satan is very angry; and because you have withstood the attacks, the pillars of the Plan have not crumbled, but are even more firmly grounded and shall not dissolve.  Changes have already taken place, and the unique Plan of God's Divine Wisdom all comes to be in perfection at the most proper time and place.  As you see things unfold, they will happen irregardless of free will…."  (Private OLOE, Mar. 15, 2004)

"…The human mind cannot comprehend the depth and the breadth of God's Infinite Wisdom….I can only tell you that at the moment in time when all seems lost, that as you continue to trust and plead as sinners for God's Mercy, His favor will rest more upon you than upon those who seem righteous.  You must do what is necessary and fit to uphold the Truth of God's Word.  That is your responsibility.  This battle is a battle of spiritual righteousness, a battle between good and evil, and a battle which focuses and directs all attention on the Truth…."  (Private OLOE, Mar. 23, 2004)

"It is very important to realize that you cannot choose God.  He created you and chose you to do what you are to do….Continue to move forward and to be happy.  This is the Wisdom of God, the Wisdom that God has given you.  Do not be afraid to rise to the occasion to voice your opinion.  For you, when you are at peace, and when you are of clear mind and have an open heart, have not only the discernment but the Wisdom of God…."  (Private OLOE, Jan. 28, 2005)

Throughout history God has continued to send his prophets to redirect or refocus His children on those revealed Gospel truths and to gift His people with graces that will open minds and hearts to the Wisdom and Love of God in His plan for each of us.  Unfortunately, many have not taken notice of His plan or been open to receive His gifts.  For those who have, Our Lady of Emmitsburg encourages that gratitude, praise and thanksgiving are due to God Almighty Who knows best:

"…God uses prophets in a timely fashion to outline at the proper time a futuristic event; and yet, to outline a way to bring about--through prayer and change--a new beginning, and the consequences of that lack of change.  So, in God's Infinite Wisdom, through time and through the technology of today which was not present in the past, you can be enlightened through wisdom of many events of the future….But you see, the Infinite Wisdom of God is far beyond your reach.  The mind cannot comprehend the depth and breadth of God's Knowledge and Wisdom and Love.  Humanity in its sinful ways is caught up within the world; and as you live within this world, it is easy to be caught up in distractions….  However, there is so much more to be taught, to enlighten and to gift.  All is in your reach if you have but an open mind, and most importantly, a humble and open heart…."  (Private OLOE, Sept. 1, 2008)

"…Few people give gratitude to God Almighty.  God the Father taught His children how to pray.  Always give thanks and praise, then ask for what you need.  If it be according to the Divine Plan, then wait patiently….Resign to His Will and wait on Him….In His Infinite Wisdom, God Almighty knows what is best…."  (Private OLOE, July 25, 2009)

"I will pour out doctrine as prophecy,

and will leave it to them that seek wisdom,

and will not cease to instruct their offspring even to the holy age."

(Ecclesiasticus  24:46)

The Wisdom of Jesus

"…When the sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue,

and many who heard Him were astonished.

They said, 'Where did this man get all this?

What kind of wisdom has been given Him?

What mighty deeds are wrought by His hands!’…"

(Mk 6:2)

When speaking of the Wisdom of Jesus, we could mean a most perfect Divine attribute; however, the Book of Wisdom in certain parts clearly personifies Wisdom as Our Lord Himself, as does St. Louis de Montfort in his treatise on Eternal Wisdom.  In His Lessons to the world, Our Lord shares His thoughts on His own Wisdom:

"Those who pray continuously and privately trust in Me and believe I hear them; I tell you, they shall be rewarded….I am now speaking of true devotion to My Most Sacred Heart by praying to Me where no one can notice….I am speaking of prayer of intimate privacy and great glory.  If you are truly My follower, you will not seek fame through prayer or attention.  You will seek humility, purity and knowledge of My Wisdom.  When you pray alone to Me, it is you and I, heart to heart…."  (JOM, Vol I, #64, June 23, 1989,  Prayer: Private &Communal)

"…What does My Wisdom tell you?  Wisdom in Me will teach you not to seek acceptance from man but seek acceptance from My Father.  My Wisdom teaches you not to put your trust in the human heart, for the human heart will torture you….

"…Trust in My Father!  Trust in Him and you will find His goodness.  Do not put your trust in man, but in God.  Man stands by you in your time of joy, but only watches on in your time of sorrow.  My Wisdom teaches you not to seek the words of praise from man; for those who speak words of praise, speak also words which are harmful and full of deceit.  Man's words are words of no value!  My Wisdom teaches you not to sway like thin branches on a tree.  Be strong in your faith and firm in your trust in Him Who sent Me….This is what My Wisdom teaches--for all to seek peace, praise and discipline from My Father through trust and open-heartedness….Happy the man who seeks Wisdom and finds it, for he shall live in Joy.  Happy the man who shares My Wisdom through the actions toward his fellow companions.  All mankind shall praise him, for they will be praising Me as I live in him…."  (JOM, Vol II, #4,  Sept. 25, 1989, Wisdom)

To attain unity in this world with the Trinity, Jesus teaches us that it requires all three elements--the mind, the heart and the soul--to be one with Him, and this can be accomplished through the Holy Spirit.  Where there is any movement toward unity with our God, we can be sure that the evil one will be working hard to create disunity and deception. Our Lord warns that it is through prayer, especially prayer for wisdom, that error, carelessness and sweet deceptions can be avoided:

"…The evil one cannot irritate you with confusing thoughts if you have given Me your mind…..These temptations can only be short-lived, for evil thoughts are not able to manipulate their actions.  When you give to Me your mind, it is united to Mine.  When you give to Me your heart, it is united to Mine.  When you give to Me your soul, My Divinity becomes yours!  It is necessary for all three elements to be united in love to Me and the Trinity….Give to Me your mind, and you will have Mine.  Be open to receive My Wisdom.  My Wisdom teaches you that the heart, soul and mind must be one in unity to be one with Me….Be open to Me.  Allow My Spirit to replace your thoughts with pure ones.  You will have the clarity to resolve solutions of problems…."  (JOM, Vol II, #47. Feb. 21. 1990, Unity)

"…Do not allow the glory of the world to entice you away from Me.  Pray for wisdom and allow Me to ward off the errors of falsehood which could dismay you and be a disadvantage to you.  Allow Me to prevent all carelessness from affecting your progress.  Be alert to those bothersome 'sweet' deceptions.  Pray and be strong through perseverance, that your spirit of Love is not broken with deceiving desires and invalid arguments…."  (JOM, Vol IV, #38, July 24, 1992, Steps to Prayer)

Our Lady spent 30 years of Jesus' private, hidden life with Him, thus making her the expert witness to the Wisdom of her Son.  No one knows better than she the Wisdom of the Child, the Cross of the suffering Savior, and the Truth of the Triumph of the Two Hearts yet to come.  She assures us that we are protected as we are tasked to bring her triumphant Love, compassion and gentleness to the forefront, and she passes on to each of us the Wisdom of her Son, a gift to be shared in Truth with all the world:

"…When you are loyal to Jesus and serve Him unselfishly and with a generous heart, He gives you bountiful graces.  Your thoughts and desires will become holy, and you will feel drawn to Jesus….As you surrender your 'self' to His Will, you will gain victory over worldly possessions.  You will gain insight and victory in His Wisdom and Power….You will grow in holiness, and you will become more and more like Jesus until you are sanctified and live in perfect union with Him…."  (Public OLOE, July 31, 1997)

"My Son desires your lives to be an echo of happiness, filled with the vision of peace, serenity and harmony.  He desires each soul to ascend in the fullness of His Joy and Wisdom.  You belong to God, little children, and this means you are all one in Him.….My Son died for all of humanity, not a select few; and His Death unified the human race as He took on each one of your sins and drew each one of you to His Sacred Heart.  Through His one act on Calvary, He taught humanity the Way to peace, unity and harmony; and He invites you to imitate His ways of holiness….Those who pray together will live together in eternity.…"  (Public OLOE, June 22, 2000)

For behold thou hast loved truth:

the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom

thou hast made manifest to me.”

(Ps 50:8)

"…Now is the time embarking upon the world when humanity will know the Truth of Christ, not only His Love and the breadth and depth of His Wisdom; but the world will also know of the Truth of the Triumph of my Immaculate Heart and that my Son has come not only as a Child, as a Salvific Savior, but as the Child who will rule the world in Truth in the beginning of the new era….

"Not all people understand the meaning of the Child, and they also do not understand that to be a 'child' one has to be born through the Holy Spirit in the purity of the womb, to come forth to bear the Cross as did the Salvific Savior; and as one takes the Cross, not the entire Cross itself, but only one little sliver of the Cross, it will be revealed to each soul the Truth of Who my Son is….

"…There is much fear within people, but what you can bring to the forefront is my triumphant Love.  You can be confident; and in that confidence you can be gentle; and in your gentleness, you can be compassionate; and in your compassion, you can reveal the Truth…."  (Private OLOE, Jan. 12, 2003)

"I desire simply to tell you that you are protected--from evil, from fear, from injustice, and from lack of Truth.…

“…Receive the Wisdom of God which has been passed on to me; and in thanksgiving, bow to my Son.  Give Him the glory which He deserves and which He rightfully owns.  For this I thank you…."  (Private OLOE, July 27, 2006)

"Continue to help all those in the world!…Allow them to know the Truth, and never waver.  The truth is the Truth.  Even in your torments and sufferings, you are made just in the Eyes of God and righteous through your humility.  Peace to you for all the Peace you give to my Son.  Joy to you for all the Joy you give to my Son.  Wisdom is to be had--a great gift!  Receive your tremendous gift…."  (Private OLOE, Dec. 16, 2007)

"…All mercy shall make a place for every man

according to the merit of his works

and according to the wisdom of his sojourn…"

(Ecclesasticus 16:15)

In a private message to Gianna on the feast of St. Catherine of Siena in 2003, Our Lord further emphasized the role of the 'Child' in this new beginning, this first phase of the unveiling of His Divine Mercy:

"We are embarking now on the new beginning, the first phase of the unveiling of My Divine Mercy.  When humanity realizes the trouble in the world, they will look for My Mercy.  They will realize that they are prisoners to a few people who control their lives through power, and materialistic and monetary means, both in the Church and in the world.  People will come to look for Me, and I will reveal the Truth and ratify My prophets.  Never again then shall you suffer, but all shall know the Truth of the Child, the Omnipotence of the Child, the Joy of the Child, the Wisdom of the Child, and the security within the Child…."  (Our Lord to Gianna, Private, April 29, 2003)

"Nations shall declare his wisdom,

and the church shall show forth his praise."

(Ecclesiasticus 39:14)

The Spirit of Wisdom

"But if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.

But if I go I will send Him to you.

And when He comes He will convict the world

in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation…." (Jn 16:7-9)

"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,

and you will be my witnesses….to the ends of the earth."  (Acts 1:8)

In His Words to the world, God the Father Himself answers some very basic questions:  Who is this Holy Spirit?  Why did the Spirit come?  How should we respond?  What are the consequences of not responding?  Do we have time to wait?

"After My Son's death He came to you again, sending the most glorious Holy Spirit, the Spirit of the Triune God, to enlighten your minds and hearts and to give you tremendous gifts, especially the one beautiful gift of Piety, so that all His children would remain faithful and totally dependent on Me, your Father…

"…I do not desire for the world to be divided or for my children to become stranded.  No one should stray away from the Truth.  But so many forget what it means to be a 'child of God,' seeking good Counsel and Knowledge and Understanding, and the awesomeness of Fear, so as to know how wonderful your Father really is.  The Piety of children is a great gift, one for all ages to understand and to trust, to have such confidence that all you desire and pray for will be fulfilled because you know a Father of Love will never leave you….

"…Come and realize and grasp this wonderful Understanding and receive these gifts of the Holy Spirit, sent to enlighten and to give you tremendous Wisdom, Counsel and Fortitude."  (GTF,  June 8, 2007)

"…What is it you truly desire?  Do you desire freedom, peace, happiness, joy, harmony, individuality, fortitude and wisdom?  What is it you desire?  And if you received them, what would you do with those gifts?  Would they be for your own gain, or would it be in thanksgiving to the Giver?  What do you want that I haven't given?….You have a choice.  You could receive; and the time you have to receive has been extended.  But in the situation at hand, so few really care.  Very few desire to receive.  Even in the midst of an economy that is struggling, who looks to God for assistance?  It is worse than in the days of Noah….Treasure these words in your hearts and do not allow the flame to go out, for this is the only Light of Wisdom and knowledge you may be receiving…."    (GTF, June 21, 2009)

As the spouse of the Holy Spirit living a life in perfect union with that Spirit, and as both Mother and teacher of all her children, Our Lady of Emmitsburg enlightens us on how to make best use of that Presence of the Spirit within, which when combined with prayer, Holy Eucharist and personal mortification, provides each of us with a most direct route to personal holiness and sanctity:

"Little ones, receive the Holy Spirit!  Receive the gift of wisdom, the gift of piety, the gift of knowledge, the gift of understanding, the gift of fortitude, the gift of counsel, and the gift of holy fear of God.  May all give praise and honor and glory to God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit!

"I see within your hearts all the suffering and pain.  For this you must bow most graciously to His Divine Will, for in suffering there is healing; and my Son will lift your suffering just as quickly as it was given to you, in good time and with good reason….

"…Unite together and know that people must love you to love God within you, not love your outward appearances but your inward love of God.  When you are close to God, they oftentimes see what they want; and when they cannot have what you have, then sometimes other human elements get in the way.  But in silence and in prayer, all shall come to know the Truth:  that the glorified God is in each person in the spirit of humility, Love and compassion.  Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, all shall rise to a level that can be attainable only through God Himself…."  (Public OLOE, May 15, 2005)

"Within your souls, your hearts and your minds dwells the Holy Spirit.  You can do nothing without His promptings….The Holy Spirits communicates to each and every one of you….Every gift and virtue you have has been given to you through the Holy Spirit.  Use your gifts wisely!  Pray for Holy Wisdom and wisdom of speech. Make use of every virtue.  Be holy.  Be saints!  There is nothing stopping each and every one of you from being a saint. You practice your love and your prayers.  You follow through by receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.  You adore Him as I do….Only one more thing is needed, that being personal mortification.  When you die to yourself, you are born in Him.  Bless those who persecute you, for they are giving you the opportunity of sanctity."  (Public OLOE, June 4, 2006)

Discernment involves being able to tell what is good and holy from what is bad and evil.  It is a gift or grace that when given must be nurtured, and when neglected, can be withdrawn.  Our Lady of Emmitsburg points out how both sinful thoughts and actions can turn one away from prayer; and how vanity can turn one toward oneself and away from communion with God, both of which are to be avoided if one wishes to embrace the Divine, to work for the common good and to assist in the salvation of humanity, never forgetting that the One Who made each of us is the One to Whom we shall return, or at least meet face to face to account for our life:

"There are many of my loved ones who are being deceived and walking unknowingly on a wrong path.  If you do not keep your eyes and hearts on Jesus, this can happen to you.  It is necessary that all my children continuously monitor their hearts and remain in a state of prayer, or it will be very difficult to discern.  I desire you to have the Gift of Wisdom so that you will be faithful servants and soldiers of fortitude in these days of confusion and darkness...."  (Public OLOE, Sept. 18, 1997)

"God grants the grace of discernment and wisdom to a chosen few, at His liking, and it is a great gift indeed.  Those who have this grace do not wonder whether they have received it, and yet are not quick or eager to give advice or counsel on spiritual matters.  Wisdom teaches them prudence and how prayer of the heart aids in pondering God's Truth.  Wisdom teaches them that obstacles to discernment and prayer come from two angles.  Firstly, vain or sinful thoughts can turn them away from prayer; or secondly, beautiful and complimentary thoughts can turn them away from true discernment to focus on their own thoughts, and the soul loses its communion with God….It is very important, little children, to worship God in Spirit and Truth.  It is important to pray with your heart and ponder God's words…."  (Public OLOE, May 7, 1998)

"Look beyond all measures of human entities, and embrace the Divine; because you work for the common good where all of humanity can be free and safe.  Think how important your works are, because God creates each soul to assist in the salvation of humanity.  He created your souls so that you could glorify Him and return back to Him.  That means that all that you do, all that you think, and all that you say should focus only on the ultimate end, which is that all of humanity would be free and safe, and that all glory is given to God….You are also invited to be humble kind, loving, understanding and pious.  Receive the Wisdom and Knowledge of God, and never forget to have a Holy Fear, for the One Who made you is the One to whom you shall return!"  (Private OLOE, May 17, 2005)

"And this is the Will of the One Who sent Me:

that I should not lose anything of what He gave Me,

but that I should raise it on the last day.

For this is the Will of My Father:

that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life,

and I shall raise him on the last day."
